I would very much prefer this to the use of such epithets as "the peccant teacher," "a certain male teacher,‘‘ &c., &c. ; besides, L have more respect for my fellow teachers than to countenance m proceeding which might in â€" any way compromise their _ reputation. Your paper has a wide circulation, and those not familiar with the late "School Diffiâ€" culties" in Ottawa, may possibly connect these choice expressions with some teach er who deserves a better. I would also remind "Fidelis," that beâ€" fore the School Management Committes, I stated, that if I decided to express my opinions upon this subject, through the newspapers, it would be done over my own signature. } It is in my power to refute almost every charge made against me by "Fidelis," and my refraining from doing so is in defiance to the expressed wish of the Board. If, however, in his official capacity, "Fidelis" will call uion me to publish a semes of replies to his letters, I will do so with pleasure, and then he can compare the statements with Mr. Martin‘s, and see how far he may be justly considered the exponment of my views. I know Mr. Martin sufficiently well to know that he is not the man to act the parrot for any one. I am satisfied he expresses Ais own $jm’ou:, and that without fear, favour or ection, Refore M. O‘Gara, P. M. To the Editor of the Times :â€" Sisx,â€"Attempts having been made to create an impression to the prejudice of Ald. LeSueur, in connection with the nonâ€" reâ€"election of the Rev. Mr. Gordon as a Trustee of the Collegiate Institute, I deem it but justice to say that, so far from bis having tried to get himself nominated for that office, be had not the least idea that I intended to propose him. It was stated at the Board that Mr. Featherston would mot accept: the office, and knowing Mr. LeSueur‘s faithfulness as a School Trustee, I thought it would be well to substitute his name for that of Mr. Featherston ; so I proposed him and the Rev. Mr. Gordon. Then some one said neither did Mr. Gordon intend to serve. At this point, Ald. LeSueur rose and said that Mr. McGillivray had, but a few hours before, told him that Mr. Gordon did not desire to act. Mr. LeSueur could have no possible interest in opposing the Rev. Mr. Gordon at this particular point, his name being then associated witg that gentleâ€" man‘s in the resolution immediately beâ€" fore the Council; so that if he had any desire to particularly serve his own interâ€" est, he would have remained silent Mr. LeSueur voted for that resolution, and consequently for the Rev. D. M. Gordon to be again appointed as a Trustee. . It is therefore difficult to understaind how Ald. Tus Maix Sewse.â€"Yesterday afternoon our reporter paid a visit to that portion of the main sewer now in course of conâ€" struction at the Canal Basin, or rather immediately to the west of the mouth of the canal. Mr. James Murphy, of the| firm of Booth & Murphy, contractors for the work, was at his post, as usual, superâ€" intending the works, being ably and energetically assisted by the American gentliemen who are associated with him. The sewer is now completed nearly one hundred and forty feet west of the canal, notwithstanding that considerable blastâ€" ing had to be done; the excavation having struck a ledge or span of rock in that section, some eighteen or twenty feet from.the surface There are about 75 or 80 men employed on the work at present. The very severe frost of the past week in~ terfered materially with their, progress ; however, the whole surtace of the earth from the brick mark is completed to where the connection with the Upper Town section will occur. The contractors anticipate, should the weather prove favourab‘e,‘ that they will be able to complete the brickwork to the point of connection by the end of next week. ‘ Mortar making during the present severe . weather was rather difficult, but by utiâ€" lizing one of the large iron buckets, used. fo: hoisting material from the excavation, by means of the steam traveller, as a cauldron, swung over a huge fire by means of a crane, which furnishes a sufficient supply of boiling water, obviated the difâ€" fichlty. ‘The plank sheeting, driven into the ground for the purpase of Freveming the " caving in olp the sides af the exca vation, are leff in the ground after the brickwork is completed, and the contracâ€" tors complain that they lose heavily by this, as the contract or specification did not conten&l:u such a very general use of plank as that which is required of them by the engineer. The phnk'm% in this manner, however, must prove of inâ€" calculable value in protecting the drain from extreme pressure after it is covered up. The contractors is this gigantic undertaking haye every reason to feal that the right men were in the right place in this case,qs evinced by the constant lfer- gonal attention of Mr. Murï¬hy, as well as the rapidity with which the whole work was pushed to completion.
