For some days past the photographing establishments have been litérally besieged by crowds, bearing costumes in bulky brown paper parcels hz-uning to have a carte taken en costume. At Mr. Topley‘s, Messrs. Stift‘s, and the opposite neighbour of the latter, Mr. Jarâ€" vis‘, it has been high carnival time ; and there little groups have assembled to speculate on and discuss the:one absorbâ€" ing topic. At home and abroad, in hotel, cb?, and private dwelling, it has been ball et preteres nikil. Evew that colloâ€" quial saveall, the weather, lias been noâ€" where ; and those who were never known to speak on any other subject, found relie! for once. Never has trade been,so brisk. The _ transactions on _ this _ event alone, have sufficed to set firmly on . tw ""=. _ Sespohdent . vender "of mapy _ & vendor . of dry goods, fancy goods, or jewellery, whom stagnation had almost driven to that somewhat indefinite point, his wits‘ end. The note of preparstion descended like a gleam of sunshine on that industrious and deserving class, the miliiners and dressmakers, at whose earnings all ï¬:nn thropic people will rejoice. In to obtain an idea of expenditure. a visit shoud be pain to the leading dry goods establishments in the city. They might be asked how many {udn they nave sold offsilk and satin, of velvet and lace, how many hundred pairs of gloves and ‘hose, not tonm:.lmbmmor articles as buitons and brai The shoemakers and tailors might be asked for their computations ; and arespectful enquiry addressed to the cabmen might elicit, if they chose to give it, some interesting details The aggreâ€" gate expenditure must have been aston ishing, for money was not spared in any case, cven on the smaller articles requisâ€" ite to" complete a handsome ‘ costime. / Many are the shoe buckles which sold at | twentyâ€"five dollars a pairâ€"five golden guineas in hard cashâ€"and so brisk w..' the demand for boots, slippers a la shoeâ€" fAy, and silken texture wherewith to make tights, that the supply was altogether inadequate. _ Rumour puts down the value of the attire of a prominent Ameriâ€" can at $30,000 ; and we know of one case where a _ bond for $6,000 _ was given as security for the due re turn of a set of brilliants In fact the ardour diuflayod in preparing for the event was only equalled by utter disregard for pecuniary considerations, Nor need we dwell on the reasons wbichl flomgtodmcb universal desire to.ppoul splendour on the occasion. The won | d-;:u and increasing ;yuhtiu of the pms»nt representative of Her Most Graâ€" ] is a thing of the past, and they themâ€" selves shall have lett us, / ~Â¥az roous. I um entering the Government House, our representative was permitted to inâ€" :znbonrio-roans set apart for the ir. The supper room is situated on the right hand side of the entrance, and wes a temporary structare of wood, made to represent the interior of an eastern stent. The canvas was red and white, cious Majesty, the charms and influence of Her mxcellency, and the affability of the bousehold, have left on society and throughout the Dominion an impression which will remain when their hospitality course, articles had to be bought here and there. Thus anybody who caredl to know how anybody else intended to dress could, in most cases, satisfy their curiosâ€" ity without much troudle. Many, however, were enabled to maintain strict privacy by employing sewing girls in their houses, thus defeating inquisitive aims ; and, at the same time, affording remunerate emâ€" ployment to a very deserving class. Curiâ€" osity stretched even within the viceâ€"regal circle, and His Exceliency was made to appear in quite a variety of costumes. Whether any of the several reports was the correct one, may be seen below ; and we need not further dwell on this subject, than to state that their Excellencies‘ cos tumes, and those of the household , disâ€" played, as might be expected, taste of a very high order, and were exquisite bath in design and workmanship. we can recollect has ever taused such bustle and excitement as the preparaâ€" tions which have been so spiritedly carâ€" ried on for soms time: and although there seemed in many quarters a disposiâ€" tion to keep secret styles of dress and character, curiosity had the better of the contest, and but few were able to keep their intentions unknown. Indeed, for fully a fortright in advance, the tale of the ball was half divuiged, for friends wore mutually acquainted with each others costumes : and as dress is always upperâ€" mostâ€"or supposed to beâ€"in women‘s minds, speculation and comparison had to be indulged in amongst outsiders, w hose opinion was worth having. Right and left advice was sought on questions of shape, shade and texture ; and, of girls in the most costly and picturesque attire, all glittering in the gaslight. Many were there who sighed for a gallety whence a view might be had of the assembly ; but the examplary old pile which does duty as a viceâ€"regal residence is without ga‘llery or balcony wherewith to gratify such a desire. Those who either were not honoured with invitations, or who from other cause were unpnable to be present, will have to content themselve: with _ such _ descriptions _ as ,they may hear or read, and trust to a great extent to their imaginative facultiés to complete the picture. Nothing that wigs and tight fitiing gloves, and in velvets and satios aglow with stars and decor ations ; of bejewelled dames and comely tion _ of _ the _ gathering _ of â€" last evening would convey but a faint impression of the scene presented by the assembled _ representations of kings, princes, and coyrtiers, in the whitest of The Grand Fancy Ball of $#kir Excelâ€" lencies the Earl and Countess of Pufferin, for which hallâ€"the city has been so euerâ€" geticaily planning and preparing for s ome »weexs past, and whither the whole Doâ€" minion has been mentally journeying during that period, came off last night at ‘Government lHouse. â€" The entertainment ‘was one of transcendant brilliancy, and will be looked on hereafter, when the Earl of Dufferin and his noble consort will no longer be amongst usâ€"for that day, unfortunately, will comeâ€"as the great festive event of their career in Canâ€" ada. lIndeed, any written deocrip-‘ GRAND FANCY BALL AT GOVERKMENT HOUSE: Cuests‘ Costumes," &c., &c.
