MOAEK, PRICEKâ€"3 CENTS Paris, Feb, 2.â€"Handly has the exciteâ€" ment and fierce inaejnmyof the l'an; savans, rswcung the exporiments 0o Professor Muller, of Weissnicht, on revi~ vitication had time to cxol before another series of experiments by some physio gâ€" ologist, and no less respectably authentiâ€" cated, starties the world of scien e. 1t is necessary to promise that the views of physiologists respecting the mode of ac tivity of the brain have recently under« gone great moditication, and . the correct ness of modern ideas is fully supported by the experiments to which we refor. 1t was formerly imagined, and is sull largely taught, that the activity o. the brain deâ€" pended upon the forces liborated by cer tain cells in the gray matier of thart or« gan, which were supposed to be the seat of very active changes demaoding an abundant supply of blood. _ Nervre . force was suppocsed Lo be set at liberty in these cells, its liberation being.attended by the production 0f heat. But these views have not been able to endure the close scrutuny to which the brain bas recontly been subâ€" jected. The microscope has shown that these cells, these supposed nerve forceâ€" producers, are only a meauns of interchange of nervous filaments. a provision tor the distribution of telegraph wires, as it were, not active centres, not Lbatteries liberating vital force of any kind. 1t has been prov= ed that in death trom stuvation, when the stomach has been unable t> receive, re tain or digest foo#, while a‘! the rest of the body loses in weight, such is not the ecase with the biain substance proper. In cases of sudden death the muscles hive been found pr¢ lucing heat lopg efter life is extinct, while in the hra? no heat i« liberated after death, althotgh the brain may be gorged with bload. ‘The mlerence ‘dnvn from these facts, as we‘l . as from . the integrity of the brain in all manner of disease, is that this organ is one of slug gish nutritive changes, an in=rl instra» ment played upon by jomos which have origin~ elsewhere than im the brain _ matter. Furthermore, nerves and brain substance when divided reunite as readily as don, or skin, or mucgus membranes, and the nervous phenomena interrupted by the wound or section are reâ€"established when the wound has healed. All physiologists agree on this Ipt'mt. And as skin, or periosteum, or mucous membrane can be transplanted, as surgeons well know and constanily de«â€" monstrate in practice, cannot neivous tissue be subjected to the same process * No reasoned our experimenter, and these mlimimriel will show that Professor ller‘s experiments were legitimated by strict .a-nmho ua-oumg and rooo.rrch. Professor Muller, after having transplant~ ed or transferred the hemispheres of the brain from one animal to another of the same species in the higher animals (mam»~ malsâ€"dogs, cate, &¢.,) and having engra!. t«4 the brain so ss to prcluce the maniâ€" festations of cerebral activity, secured at length the opportunity of performing the same experiment in man, and with the reâ€" sults which it is the object of this letter to detail. 1 give the facts as recorded in the Gaszsette Hebdomadaire, taken from Virchow s Archives, a medical journal published at It was at Leipzig that tho experiment was performed. A soldier who had killed the colonel of bis regiment in cold blood, and whom the severity of Prussian militery :fiihle would have caused to die a hun - deaths had it been possible, was de= liberately hinded over to the surgeons, by sentence of court martial, and was contined in a strong room in the military bhospita‘, entirely :n the dark as to the fate which awaited hbiw. He was kept there ready for an emergency, which did not fail to occur, â€" A keeper of a beer celler in Leip~ uig, a man resembling, in many respec‘s, the condenined soldier, and who had been seized with lo:‘b inflammation of the heart, or rather of its investing membrane, was brought to the hospital t3 die of that incurable and promptly fat*! malady, No sconer had the anticipated death taken place than the dead saloonâ€"keeper was placed on a tible, on which was the chloroâ€" tormed but living body of the soldier. Two surgeons, with u-bbntLprooeakd alike in both cases to divide scalp over the sumunut of the sku}l from eer to ear, "turn back the divizions, and remove. the skull cap by incisions passing around the skull like a crown: In the soldier, whose caroâ€" tid arteries had been prepared for comâ€" pression, these vessels were clamped so as prevent hemorhage, and but a few drops of blood were lost during the entire operaâ€" tion. In each the dura mater was incised, and the hemispheres of the brain were reâ€" nwdby.;.nlflviu &.'h"" thin« bladed knife passing avove the cerebellum, otamrn;fl-findfiuuwo inches in diameter the cura cerebri.
