Yestérday at moon sharp, Mr. John Rochester was reâ€"elected as Mayor for the current year by acclamation by ourCityCouncil â€"â€"the only member of that tody absent being Alderman McDougal. ‘The motion of election was made by Alderman Martineau, and was seconded by Alderman Cunningham. Mayor Rochester said :â€" _ Gextieues,â€"I feel icdeed much gratified at this unanimous expression of your confâ€" Cence. During the few months of the past year, in which I occupied the same elevated position, 1 ¢id my best, it is true, to earn your good opinion, and that of my fellowâ€" citizens generally, by a close attention to the best interests of the city, and made it my study how to promote those interests in the most effectual and economical mwanner ; but I felt that I had to rely much on your indu}â€" gence and forbearance, and < take pleasure now in acknowledging the kind assistance and support | received at| your bhands, and without which any effort of mine would be fruitless, In stepping into the place vacated by the lamented death of the late Mayor, H, J. Friel, I felt myself in a difficult position, as any shortcomings of mine would appear to all the greater disadvantage when com pared with his assiduity, vigilance and great adaminâ€" Istrative ability. I have endeavroured, howâ€" ever, to walk in his footsteps, and trust, as your vote toâ€"day assures me, I have not been altogethet unsuccessful. > of money in a supicious locality, and " protected" up to ths station. Let off, Anenterprising youth undertook the manâ€" agement of two women on Christmas last. fle looked sorry for his temerity, as well te might, _for‘ one, -‘Lo gavre evidence, poured forth a torrent of testimony enough to f:ighten an entire regiment. ‘The Cadi was afraid to call ths otherâ€"evidently much to her disappointment. $5 and costs, or three weeks at hard labor. Aonther bridge will have to be built, and a modâ€"] bas already been prepared, which is copsidered by competent engineers as excelâ€" lent both for its style and comparative cheapâ€" ness ot construction, Pooley‘s bridge will also have to give place to one better adapted to the growing wants of that section of the city, and I need scarcely add that the bridge spanning the Rideau, leading to New EKdinâ€" burgh, is one nut calculated to re4â€"ct much credit on the capital city of Canada. In regard to the allâ€"important question of conâ€" structing water works for the. city, though much bas been done in au initiatory way the great project yet remains to be realized, and it is to be bhoped that considerable progress will be made towards the reaiization of this desirable improvement during the year we have now enfered. I would say a word also on the : Canada Central Railway, which no doubt will occupy considerable attâ€"ntion during the year from the municipalities interested in its conâ€"truction, I must say The Sappers‘ Bridge certainly did good serâ€" service in its time, and is yet so far from deâ€" cay that it is likely to be of service tor many years to come, but it is acknowledged on all haunds to be altogethâ€"r inadequate as the ouly thoroughfare between Upper and Lower Town. + % that western municipalities /have shown an example we might follow with some benefit, by the liberal assistance they bare ungrudgâ€" ingly given to projects of this kind, and their experience convinces them that they have gained vastly in the end. seat of Government, and sivce we have uoâ€" fortunately lost our Court House by the late fire it might be worthy of our consideration to approach the Government with a solicita~ tion to assist in the construction of a building which would suit its purpose as well as th«t ot the county and city. It is more than likely the Government would acquiesce in any reasonable proposition, rather than have to pay an annual rent for such a building. A portion of the City Hall equare might be appropriated for this purposs if found to meet the views of all concerned. According to â€"the Act of Confederation a Dominion Court will be established at the The Mayot clect next referred to the imperâ€" fect drainage of the city, and hoped that some more effectual system would be inaugurated than at present exists, as the water from the Rideau River in spring freshets backs up into the main sewer on King street, and floods the cellars of the inhavitants of a considerable section otf Lower Town. The proper system of drainage, and the one . which must in the end be adopted, is that given in the report of the City Engineer. w . His Worship next condemned in very strong terw.s the careless manner in which the city funds have been wasted on streot improvemwents, and declared it to be his opinion that the ratepayers did not usually get more than fifty cents worth of work for im provements, He desired that a sharper supervision should be kept over the men employed on the street improvements, and that none should be employed but those willing to give a fair days work for a fair day‘s pay. His Worship concluded by again thanking the Council for the confidence reposed in him in thus again placing him in the proud posiâ€" tion of chief magistrate of the capital, without any solicitation on his part, and hoped that the same kind feelings should continue, and the same hearty support be given him in the Aischarge of his official dutics as he had already experienced. . His Worsbip named as auditor James Dyke.,Eeq. It was moved by Ald. Traversy, and seconded by Ald. Pratt, that Robert O‘Reiilly be appuinted an associate with Mr. Dyke, in suditing the city accounts. An amendment was introduced by Ald. Cunningham, and seconded by Ald. Goulden, that Christopher Carleton be so appointed. Some discussion ensued, The amendment was put and lost, and Mr, ‘Rseilly voted in as associate anditor. Ald. Robinson moved, and was seconded by Ald. Cunningbam that Aiderman Bate, Martineaun, Heneâ€"y, with the mover and seconder, be appointed a committee to recommenad & standing committee for the current year. The motion was carried.
