Fessenden, Fitth United States ArtiHery, waited upon her to escort her inside the fort, Her child accompanied thein, She was taken to General Miles‘ headgaarters, who received he: with every politeness and consideration due her position. Under other circumstances she might have striven more sedulously, perâ€" | haps, to evoke the niost favourable impression i possible, upon the custodian of her busband, hut her wreat anviety was to proceed at once possible, upon the custodian of her busband, but her great anxiety was to proceed at once to her husband‘s place of confinement and see~ him. She wanted to see how he bad borne his imprisonment, whether he was sick or well, and lcarn all about him. She was not long kept in anxicty. Mr. Davis had been apprized of her coming. , Within fifteen minutes from the time of her admission to the fort she was with him in Carvoll Hall, Licutenant Fessenden still bore her company. She has remaiged with Mr. Davis all day, and took her dinner with him. An officer bas been constantly in the same room. ‘Their meeting was a tender and affecting one, as such a meet~ ing must paturally be 1:2“ such a protracted separation, and, particulatly under the cireumâ€" stances attending their ~separation. . And we let the curtain drop over their talks of ‘the past, their realizations of the present and hopes for the future, She confesses finding Mr. Davis in better health than she had expeotâ€" e1; but still avers that he is much fecbler than when brought here, She is every wa satisfiecd with the treatment he has recaw& and acknowledges that everything, saving his restoration to liberty, has been done for him that could be. To Dr. Cooper, his medical attendant and adviser, she is specially thankâ€" ful and gives the unqualified credit of keeping him as well and cheerful as he is. 1t is not known yet whether she will stay at Dr. Coopâ€" er‘s during her sojourn here or at the Hygera Hotcl. _ 1t is also not known yet how long she will remain here. _ Mrs Davis4eft Montreal on Monday at three p m. She has travelled night and day to get here." THE PRISONER AT FORT MONROE Tix Decay or tas Hovses or PakLiANENT.â€" The more exposed parts of the palace are mouldcring away. . On the river font the deâ€" cay is very couspicuous. _ Projecting plinths, cornices and mouldings have been gnawed and cracked; the fine tracery ofâ€" panels and other ornaments has been corroded to dust ; and even on flat surfaces, patches of the outer skin, as it were, have pecled off from utter rottenness, Other portions of the palace are similarly affected, even in the interior of the courts, and on the sides away from the river, The subject has been under the consideration of a series of chicf commissioners. A great variety of experiments, extending over nine or ten years, have been tried ; and several emiâ€" nent chdémnists and other scientific men have been called upon for their opinions. In 1859, Professor Faraday and Sir Roderic Murchison reported that a remedy had been found. This was a preparation, akin to the Zopissa of the ancient Greeks, invented by Mr. Szrelmey. Various parts o'f the building had been washed over with it, and, at the end of two years, Proâ€" fessor Faraday stated that it was an excelâ€" lent prrscn?tivc, : and _ that there “"o;: @«no signs 0j cxl‘uli:bn or separation prepared face of the stone, or any ground for fears in that respect." _ When Mr. Cowper caine into oflice he resolved to trust the experience of time rather than the judgment of science. And no doubt this was the surest tost. Only in the meanwhile the decay has been growing worse, and nine years have surcly afforded sufficient materials: for decision. â€" 1t is some time since Professor Abel, of Woolwich, was commissioned to: examine the walls on which the ::Xerimul prepara~ tions have been used ; we may now ask why he has not yet reported, and why uthlng whatever has been done to check the evil From a careful examination of the river front, it certainly appears that Professor Faraduay was correct in his report, and that the composition he approved has thus far stopped the rotting of the stone where it was applicd‘some nine years since. This, however, is a question for investigation cither by a scientific commission or a select committee of the house. Of the cight frescoes in the Poet‘s Corridor, at least six are more or less seriously damaged by the scaling off of the pigment.â€"Pall Mall Gazet, A singular incigent has just taken place at Neufchatcl, in Switzerland, . At the death of a imerchant in that city, on the credit side of his books the name of "God" was found inâ€" scribed for a vonsiderable sum. No one knew of siich a creditor, and on investigation eviâ€" dence was obtained that deceased, who was a man of great picty, had opened an account to the Father of All, and entered to it each year a share of his profits. ‘The clugclun claimâ€" ed the sum on the ground that (npu-ed God upon earth, while their w:muul by the Canton, ‘The afiair willâ€" y be brought before the tribunals, ' Tus Haxpsourst Womax ix Tus Worbo, at Surrer.â€"Paris is amused at a recent exhibi~ tion of impudence, by the notorious Countess Castiglione. _ At the ball given by Lady Cowâ€" ley, four chairs were placed at the supper table for the Prince of Denmark and other distinâ€" guished personages, who were present, the other guests taking their champagne and salad standing. Jn one:chair was the Countess Cowley, in her charactcr of hostess; on her left sat the Prince eating his salmon and fute gras, and quaffing his champagne, with the appetite and zest of youth, stimulated by dancing and flirtation, <On his left was the Duchess of Bassano, the mistress of the cereâ€" monics at the Tuilleries, as representing the Empress. In the fourth chair, taking preceâ€" dence »f Countesses and Pecresses, was esâ€" consced the handsome Countess, cool, dollectâ€" ed and unabashed, People stared, but she was undismayed. ‘The Countess Castiglione is, perhaps, the most beautitul woman in the world, and was originally sent to Puris, by Count Cavour, to fascinate the Emperor and worm secrets out of him, in which mission she succeeded, At one time she was received at the court oltheo'lf\‘:l.hriel. blt;n':.mdod in con: jealousy Empress. Huhmt-qm adds to her notoriety, and is the subject of much comment., A correspondent of Wilke‘s SApirit lately atâ€" tended a concert at Panama, which drew toâ€" gether all the fashionable people of the place. Although the season of lent was in full blast, the native ladies turned out in fair numbers, resplendent in feathers, fancy fans and silks, A few were really beautiful, and dressed in exâ€" qusite taste, but as a rule, the customes were & little highcolored.Eve: ybody brought theirown chairs, and it was a novel sight to see a large audience collecting slowly, attended by serâ€" vants bearing rocking, arm and parlor chairs, all scattcred about the hall in grotesque conâ€" fusion. 1t reminded him of a secoud hand turniture storeâ€"only more so. . Another little peculiarity of the mative gentlemen would amuse more uncivilized audiences, and that was, that between the music caballeros would light their cigarettes and puff away with the l most bland <indifference to squeamish stomach.
