Certain cft-lle- * men bave formed themsePves into a club for . the prevention ot their extermination ; and in ï¬c course of their very laudabié efforts in this tection they have of course, incurred the obâ€" loquy of the partisans of fl:‘:ï¬xcd net interest. In the course of their argument, the Fish and Game Protection Club pointed to the very ob vious course af our.own legisiation, and said that we had abolished fixed nets, which, as far as England itself is eoncefnq{, is certainly true ; while in Ireland we have abolished someâ€" thing like nineâ€"tenths of them ; and even in Scotland something had been done, and estuâ€" aries and mouths of rivers have been awept clear of them, though vested interests of some few years duration haye been hitherto too strong even for common sense backed bl poâ€" pular opinion. Still, the tendency of all lation on this subject has been strongly towards the abolition of fixed nets. Much discussion has been raised upon this question in Canada, and the evidence taken in this country, and the legisâ€" lation which has taken place, have been cited ; and a bill has been brought into the Canadian Parliament by the commissioner to regulate the figheries. Now, one would have thought that in Canada, where the salmon fisherics are confessedly for the most part the property of the Government, there could not have been much difficulty in avolishing the use of fixed nets. But wonderful to relate, even in Governâ€" ment property some one seems to have acquirâ€" ed a vested interest somehow, and the comâ€" missioner, instead of ‘doing away with fixed nets, actually pm&:-eflo licence them, imposâ€" ing upon them weekly close time m in the Scotch law. We may here take to say that, if the commissioner has taken the Scotch Act as the model of our legislation upon the salmon question which is best worthy of imitation, he might as well take | Martin Tupper as the most woflh;mnodel amongst our philosophers. | ‘The and Game Club do not like the bill ; they do not hesitate to s&# so, thereby encurring the ire of the Montreal Transcript,. which might almost be suspected of Fenian proclivities, from the strong language it uses. The club, too is said to sneer at the close time for fixed nets, which really is much more respectful treatment than such an utterly ruiculoumndï¬nm A weeklty close time for nets, even hpon our own Bcotch coast, is sufficiently absurd and inoperative ; but when it «comes#o the , | adoption of this sapient measure as & species of «mulcent to the rigours of fixed nets upon. the wilderness that borders Ib& Bt. Lawrence, where as the sa marâ€" ’ ke:] &c., are m.(:‘“ï¬:“ no ‘ | available means of comm one feels : | perplexed to know whether the commissioner ‘ | is only peapetrating a very solemn and ponderâ€" ous joke, or whether it be possible that anyone ; | can be so profoundly ignorant of the whole question as to suppose that such an enactment could be enforoed. At all events, the comâ€" missioner appears notto have the smellest j | hesitation in preparing and drawing up & lengthy Act of Parliament upon the subject, and thercfore we must presume that he is simply throwing a tub to the whale, and it is itr-lly::my lu:n“edtd the whale to sneer at it, instead of being profoundly grateâ€" 1 ful for the attention ; we mre concerned, that such a measure should be brought forward, and that any portion of the colonial press be found ; | to defend it. | We certainly have, as the Tren script backed up the Fish and Game iâ€" | Club in Mk‘htmflnfll'uu,u“ll *\ be happy at all times to lend them any .asâ€" h sistance in wmhnmaa-b. In quoting the ppgto&thM e m CC Cw upon our sea fisheries, the Transcript gives their recommendation to all legislative restrictions upon the “h(-:m; ment, as a contrastito tbm- iobeimpowdo:o’-kov .
