[ t} + (} ki Ozaws, March 3, 1836 TO OBTAIN NEW ONES FOR 1866â€"1 *» IMMEDIATELY. , And thereby sroid PROSECUTION. > J. B. TURGEON, . Licesse Ixsreoron. Jrces Sicorre aso Dissextrst Scuoors.â€" On the 22nd alt., Judge Sicotte rendered in the Buperior Court of St. ~Hyacinthe, a judgment which shows, that, consistent with his previous liberal interpretation yf the School Law, he is determined to protect the ‘Dissentient minorâ€" ities in their rights. ‘The Commissioners of Acton Vale Village had, some time since proâ€" Secuted the Company of the Southâ€"East mizes for the sum of $2,250, being an amount of scbool tazes due for the years 1862 and 1864, and which the Company, as Dissentients, reâ€" fused to yay. | The Comuissioners had obtainâ€" * ed against the Company a verdict of a bench of mugistrates at St. Libvire. ‘The Company appyaicd, and the case being brought in the ;Buperior Court before Judge Sicotte, he has lanoaulled the verdict of the lower court. ‘The learned judge, in stating the reasons on which he basea his judgment, vrought out the three following points:â€"1ist. ‘Tuat the Company baving Iegaily declared themselves Dissenâ€" tie nts cannot be taxed for the support of the schools of the majority. 2ndâ€" That the muniâ€" cipality of Acton Vaie was not lgally constiâ€" tuted until October, 1864, and thercfore cannot eluin. back takes for a time anterior to existâ€" ence. 3rd, That the schoul commissioners had neglectud to conform to the law, having from carclessness failed to have had a valuation made of the taxable property, a list of the taxes 4due, and a public notice issucd of their intenâ€" tion to levy such taxes, Of these three conâ€" sderations the first is the most important to Dissenticats‘ and the impartiality of Judge ‘Bicotte towards those of another faith than his «48 deserving of all â€"praise. ‘The above fucts are extracted from an article in the Courrierâ€"de . Buch en.eâ€"prise is commendable. No wonder they beet us at raising wheat. You may think it strange, but I question if the best farmers in Ambcrica are not to be found in Upper Canada. ‘They beat us in raising the wh.at ; their barley is certainly superior to ours in quality, and I think the same is true of cats. In the cultivation of root crops we are nowhere. Don‘tget angry. We beat them in raising corn, and in all crops which partake rather ot a commercial than a strictly agriculâ€" tural character. We are willing to mise small crops it we can get large profits ; while a Canaâ€" dian farmer, partaking largely of the Scotch and bnglish, conservative character, continucs ou in the even tenor of his way. He is not so comstuntly looking for some casier method of making a living. He is a farmerand his father was a furmer ibsfore him, a.d he intends to live and die a farmer.
