Chief Greer this week placed Mrs. Joe Deplante under arrest on a warâ€" rant from Haileybury. In addition to this Haileybury charge there are alâ€" so said to be a numver of other charges made against‘the woman. Th Haileybury charge acecuses her of col!â€" lecting money elaiming that it was to be used_for the purposes of the Chilâ€" dren‘s Aid Society and then retainâ€" ing the money for her own use. She eollected money in Haileybury and district, turning over only $10.00 to the Childrens‘ Aid. She is und»râ€" stood to elaim that only $40.00 more than the $10.00 paid over was collectâ€" ed, but the C.AS. ‘has, of course, no way at present of knowing how much was actually eollected in the name of the Society by this Mrs. Deplante. Mrs. Deplante is a woman of about 30 years of age, is married, and thas five children. Her husbhand was here lookâ€" ing for her during the past few days. When arrested she was in a shaek in town said to be occupied by two forâ€" eigners and herself. She will appear before Magistrate Atkinson for trial tomorrow. It is stiuated on what is sometimes called the Cochrane Claybelt, being on the Transcontinental about 70 miles west of Cochrane. Settlement all along the railway line is increasing right along. If hayâ€"growing can be be made as profitable as Mr. Ballanâ€" tyne‘s report suggests, settlement in this area should become very popular. ‘*+Eight pounds of red clover, two of alsike, and smm of timothy were sowh per acre. As these meadows were seeded down for two years and erops taken each year, one ‘half the cost of clover and timothy sesd is charged to each erop.‘‘ HATTIE GOLD MINES TREASURY STOCK PLACED Evidently farming can be made to pay big dividends in the clay belt of the North Land, to judge by the reâ€" prrt recently given out by Mr. Smith Ballantyne, superintendent of the Goâ€" vernment Experimental Station 5t Kapuskasing. Indeed the figures givâ€" en by Mr. Ballantyne suggest a proâ€" fit of about four hundred per cent. on hay. Even a profiteer would view this as aâ€"fair profit. . Mr. Ballantyne preâ€" sents a statement showing that the total erop area for hay was 122 acres and this yielded 158.6 tons. The rent of land at $3.50 per acre, use of maâ€" chinery at $1.00 per acre, seed, etc., manual labour at 35¢. per hour, teamsâ€" ters at 35¢. and 40¢.â€"pér hour, and horse labour at 15¢. per hour, figures out to a total at $1334.53. The total yield was 158.6 tonis. Thus the cost per ton of producing the hay figures out at #8.41. In his report, Mr. Balâ€" lantyne says:â€"‘‘Hay is selling now at Kapuskasing for $40.00 per ton, which leaves a profit above cost of production of $31.59 per ton. For the 122 aeres of hay there was a profit of $38953.98.. Commenting on the figures generally, Mr. Ballantyne: says:â€" ‘‘The season of 1921 was rather unâ€" favorabe for the hay crop of North-l ern Ontfario, as the rainfall in t-he| month of June was only 1.1 inches, and the temperature was e.\'tremelyl hot during the latter hailf of June and the first half of July. ‘Rainfall was more plentiful in July and August, 6.5 inches falling in July and 1.7 in Auâ€" gust. ‘*The firs from the e June, but a from red c th It is eurrently reported in circles usualy well informed on such matters that Dr. S. G. Abbott and his assoâ€" ciates have underwritten the treasury stock of the Hattie Gold Mines Limitâ€" ed at a ‘figure whicih _assures ample caâ€" pital to conduct operations necessâ€" ary to make the property a producing mine. A thorough examination was previously made of the Hattie Gold Mines. It is understood that the first 400,000 shares were underwritten at 25 cents per share and the remainder at a figure of at least 50c. per share. The president of the Hattie Gold Mines is Dr.. W. P. St. Charles who bas interests in other North Land mines, the Lake Shore among others. Others on the directorate are also exâ€" perienced in mining matters, ‘The Hattie Co!ld Mines are located near Mathieson. The cribed as havi tical. with the eamp of Color shafte ‘nn tha and gold tellurides are also said to be in noticeable evidence on the Hattic property.> The property has been desâ€" cxribed as having a formation idenâ€" tical. with the famous Cripple Creek eamp of Colorada. There are three shafts on the property and it is the present intention to use these and extract sufficient ore to finance a mill. It is estimated that the ore selected will run from $5,000 to $15,000 per ear. With these returns it is considerâ€" ed that it will not take very long to make enough to finance the building of a mill upon the property. With the erection of the mill the development of the property will be conducted with special energy and thoroughness. Maftzeson.
