HEAVY 1935 FROM FIRE [X ThE LAMLMME BLGCI Fire Sundsy Afternoon Guts Brick Veneer Rooming House on Pins Street. npposite King‘s Amusement Parlors commonly known as the Laflamme Block though now owned by Mr. Manion, was destroyed by fire on Sunâ€" day afternoon. , The loss to Mr. Manâ€" ion will be a serious one. The buildâ€" ing and contents would easily total a value of $10,000 or more and only about $3000 insurance was carried. The origin of the fire is unknown, but it is thought to be due to an overâ€" heated pipe. In any event the blaze started in the basement of the buildâ€" ing. Roomers in the house attempted to extinguish the fire when it was disâ€" ecovered ‘but were not able to do so. When they saw it was beyond their control they at once turned in an alarm by phone. The brigade made x record response, being at work on the seene within two minutes of the rgceipt of the alarm. Four lines of hose were at once playing on the fire, but on account of the headâ€" way secured ‘by the fire and the type of the building the structure could not be saved. The firemen, however, were able to protect the frame buildâ€" ings on either side, though the crowd that gathered were about sure that at least one and maybe both of them must go. The destroyed rooming honse was a brickâ€"veneer building with much of the inside construction of beaver board. Consequently it was a difficult fire to deal with. The fireâ€" men, however, worked particularly hard and effectively and their efforts were decidedly deserving of the highâ€" est praise. When they were called at about 450 p.m. the fire had considerâ€" awble headway, the whole place apparâ€" ently being on fire inside. The weather was severe, the thermometer registerâ€" ing ten below with a chilling wind blowing. One citizen who attempted to assist, the firemen in their trying work was overcome by the smoke and had to be carried to toe King Edward Cafe for medical attention. The fire brizade, however, stuck to their posts and did effective and creditable work. Any one of them suffered more real hardship and danger than the three U.‘ 8. balloonists. Drenched with water that freezes hard upon them, suffering from the cold and the piercâ€" ing wind, working harder than men should work under the conditions and taking risks and facing dangers,â€"all this the firemen look upon as part of their job and they do not say anyâ€" thing about it. Until late at night they were on the job, and even the their job and they do not say anyâ€" thing about it. Until late at night they were on the job, and even the hours through the evening to the next day saw some of them on guard to see that the smouldering fire should not break out again. "The pressure was zood,,but. as noticed in other fires durâ€" ing intense cold weather the water seemed to have much less extinguishâ€" ing power than in milder weather, due no doubt to chemical action ecaused by the freezing weather. build pape The fire had gained such headway before the alarm was given that many of the roomers were unable to save their effects, thus suffering serious ing and Manion nas 108s vance tOI Mailevbary In( nainlin ate a With tliis iss ‘riptions ‘expir ibscriptions n« »lves somethin anee. The regular business session was 4eld first, with President Lamb in the thair and between forty and fifty nembers present. The chief item of reneral interest was the decision to secure the use of the Oddfellows‘ Hall ‘or future meetings. A vote of thanks vas passed to the Presbyterian church nanagement for the use of the baseâ€" nent for meetings in the past. The [.O0.0.F. hall however, was thought to »ffer many advantages, including the ise of a piano and the possibility of special social features after the busiâ€" aess of meetings is transacted. To use the 1.0.0.F. hall it will be necessâ€" iry to change the nights of meeting, and Mr. J. K. Moore accordingly gave notice of a motion to be submitted at next meeting to change the nights of meeting from the first and third Monâ€" days to the first and third Fridays of each month. Messrs. J. Haileybury had Spechk and Bailey on their lineâ€"up and as usual put up their best game on their own ice. Burns, goal; Masterson, MceParâ€" land, Austen, Jones and Carmichael were the others playing for Haileyâ€" bury. The Poreupine team was the same as at Liskeard with Patsy Parkâ€" er playing and Geo. BUT COCHRANE SEEM AGAINST ‘‘ON TO BAY‘""* STUNT There seems to ‘be a general feeling that the Proposal of the Ontario Goâ€" vernment to start construction of the T. & N. 0. Railway north of Cochrane at the present time as a means of alâ€" leviating the unemployment problem is a serious mistake. The belief is gen eral that this extension should at least wait until several other more pressing works are attended to. The North Land Highway is generally considerâ€" ed as a much better public work to tackle both as a means of advancing the interests of the North Land and as a "means of giving employment to any needy people there may be in the Pravince. ‘While the general public seems to hold views along this line, the town of Cochrane is on record matier.
