In the. pitching department this team is Very strong. First ott they have Hilts the portside lad who made a great name for himself last season. This boy uses his head -at all times, mixes them up well, has lots of speed and for a left hander has great control. He is a clever fielder and by long odds the 'best fielding pitcher in last year's league. He should be a. good winner for the Crafters. Then we have big "Chuck" Walker. It was only at the tail end of the season last year that he prov- ed himself a pitcher, but we believe it was lack ot work more than any- thing else that caused him to tall, down earlier in the season. He is al bear for work and when workingl right can just about take the mea-! sure of moat anybody’s team. Harry When big "Chuck" Walker came to major league form at the tail end of last season and showed that he was a pitcher at ability when in proper condition, the Metal Craft lads sent up the howl "Watch us next year." Now that is precisely what'the fans will have to do. This year's _aggre- gation that will represent the hos- pital tactory is one that cannot be overlooked. Manager Ed. Walker has spent many a sleepless night the past two monthtrtiguring his team oit, and on paper he sure has a lulu. The Left Overs The Lett Overs an aggregation gathered together by "Smoke" Mc- Bride and "Jimmy" Farrell will have to :be reckoned with in the race. Last year's Club team, Vets team, Metal Craft, Stelcos and Outlaws are all represented as well .as a couple of new ones. Behind the plate the one and only "Doe" Alexander will perform. "Doe" needs no introduce tion, he's gathering them in just as easily as last year and still has his batting eye. And on second base the honorable Mr. Bonham will hold forth which means that second base will he well looked after. "Doe" and Bonham are rather out of luck this year, they won't be able to chew, at each other. On the firing line will be found the famous "Smoke" ably assisted by Norton whose work has‘ improved wonderfully under “Smok-1 es" tuition. Konkle and Durham are1 the candidates tor first, both good et- ficient fielders and tair batters; third will be ably looked after as "Doe" Buck and Bromley are both hard at work and both in good form. Burgess will be holding down short- he is fielding as well as last season and in addition has his eye on the ball now and should prove some bat- ter. Ingthe outfield we tind Cliff Atwell, a new comer and one whose work has attracted considerable at- tention. Stan Patterson the speed boy of the Metal Craft team. "Doe" Farrell a good fielder and batter. VanDyke who showed the tans some nice work last year and Jimmy Far- relr. This team as will be noticed are all seasoned players; they have fair batting strength and are good fielders and will go a long way in the pennant run. George Wilson will he the mainstay in the pitchers box, but unless he has a good relief pitcher to work with him, it is doubtful it he can go tar, for it is a lead pipe cinch right now that a one-pitcher team is going to be' out of luck. Ernie House a new member will be behind the bat to handle Wilson's curves, while our old friend Herman Shafer will again be on the first sack. Sam. Crabbe will be back at his old station on third and Dayton Marsh will hold down the second sack as usual, with Burgess playing shortstop. For the outfield .Snetsinger, Wade, Peace, Ready and Hayhoe will try for plac-_‘ es. There are several 'ntiriiiidfii't/ this lineup and at present it As hard“ to tell just what calibre ot ball play- ers they are. Manager Hand says they are whirlwinds, so we will just let it go at that. The teams as they have been reg- istered with the league executive are - High School This team was the big drawing card team of last year's league, and while they may play as snappy ball and as good ball as last year it is doubtful if they will be as big a drawing card. There has been some changes in the personnel of last year's team, "Bo" Farrell having joined the Tackeaters, while Sliv- ers" Corman has been dropped from the payroll. "GuBsie" Hand is Man- aging this aggregation this season and JY "old sea salt” says “look out for ." These four teams are pretty well balanced and at the present writing there is not a weak team in the out- fit. It is a little early in the season to start picking winners, but at that we think you could do it as well as two months from now, so evenly matched do the teams appear to be. The league schedule is in two Bee- tions and the winner of the first ser- ies must play off with the winner of the second series tor the INDEPEN- DENT trophy. The league this year is a strong one being composed of the Tackeat- ers from the Farrell Basket Factory, High School, Metal Craft and a team known as the Left Overs, that has been gathered together 'bar, the C. O. D. Kid "Smoke" McBride 'and "Jimmy" Farrell. Everything is all set tor a glorious opening of the Municipal Soft Ball League on Tuesday afternoon next, there being only one thing that will mar the festivities, and that is wea- ther. It Old Jupe Pluv. behaves himeslf and keeps his water spout plugged up then the fans will see two corking good opening games. Sfl BALL PNSNMENE ALL fill FUN THE OPENING GAMES (Ill NININHIA INN f8oOoOOOOOoOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO0OOOoOOOOOOotto Wednesday, May 18, 1921 Metal Craft are both wil ood form. but .tLW'SSSSSlSSlSRR5?W2WWS2S?5?5?225N2S?fNfr29fi t2S?i?5?%?5r8W8ed t3O000000o00000000000000000O0OiOOOOOO_eMMMMMythtSe, -It is hardly likely that , Farrell, the ever speedy o will don the spikes again this but you never can tell. Roy Farrell the peppery second baseman of last year's Club Cham- pions has thrown in his lot with this team, and can he depended upon .at all times to turn in a fast speedy game,- this is especially so on the base paths. In the catching department this team has them all beaten a mile, for they have last year's sensation "Bo" Farrell to do the receiving and there is none better than the kid to be found anywhere. Tackeaters On paper this team right now looks like the cream of the league. They have a lot of young but experienced men on their team, who are ball players from the ground up. In the pitching department they have no less than three moundmen all car- rying the name of Fisher. First they have Wray Fisher, of last year’s Outlaws, who pitched last season, without a doubt the best game ever witnessed on the local lot. Wray is a little bit inclined to "go up" if his fielders fall down behind him, but outside of that he is a hard man to face. Ches Fisher of last year’s War -Vets team is ready for mound duty, but unless he exhibits a ‘better con-, trol of the ball than he did last sea-l .son he will not the much help. This boy has alot of steam-and a nice as- sortment pt balls, but lacked con- trol, it he has secured»~ that control then watch out for him. {Wally FiSh-i er is also on this tttatb- and if - his 'Ibum" leg holds up under him he will make all the heavy hitters whiff the atmosphere. Iaown tirst base, and while he is a Ilett hander, at the same time he can lturn in a mighty nifty game on the 'initial sack. Over on the short, stop Ernie Bell of last year's Stelcos will lperform, while Andy Mickus by long odds the best third Backer in the league last year, will handle every- thing that comes near the keystone corner. This team when it gets into action is going to be a hard one to beat. The boys are all fair batters and are liable to break loose most any time and slaughter the best kind ot pitch- mg. Lloyd Phipps will work alternately in the catching department with Fisher and if he has any kind ot luck should have a good year. For the outfield "hit-ern-hard" Sims is sure ot a position and tor the other two jobs Walker is going to work out a bunch ot youngsters who are all showing a lot ot class. They are "Bugler"' ”Clarke, "St1uealr" "r Phipps, Johnny Fisher. ,")itr,i- _' ui M3q000OeMye, aeeAAAAAAAaxhaaa:v, o00Oo'OeMMMMMMtee, iMaql 'f {iillF'O fR'"lr'r-rlrslG "iiiij"jijjijiijiiijitib" "Jerry" oldtimer is year, net played in the”‘MaJ‘or leagues alone has been positively , prove during the past month. Wage T of teams in the Soft Bani Lea e have been busier than bees try tr to steal players from one ano r and in other ways emulating ' big moguls of 'baseball, the It difference /being that there _ re few if any shekels passed out giro: players.. Much angling has been, done by managers to get certain men. In some cases they succeed. ed, in other cases they failed. The strenuous efforts put forth by the ball moguls for players had the ef. feet at least of causing one team to withdraw its entry from the league. At first it was intended to have a tive team league composed of the Metal Craft, Left Overs, Tackeaters, Mountaineers and High School, but at the last moment the strong ball outfit from over the hill top withdrew and all because their star southpaw pitcher Hilts had been signed up by the Metal Craft management. Manager 'mm.. my" Fisher of the Mountaineers took the stand that Hilts was a mountain boy, despite the fact that he was working in the BayMac factory, and legally, morally and every other way belonged to the Mountaineers. Walker the man- Once again “Lincoln’s Leading Weekly" is to the forefront with a handsome silver cup as the trophy tor the champions of the municipal Soft all League. The cup donated by the INDEPENDENT last year was won by the GRIMSBY Club team under the guidance of "Doe" Alexander and is now one of, the treasured possessions ot that in.. stitution. The Club has not enter- ed a team this year but the mem- bers of last year's aggregation are all playing on various other teams. This season the cup will 'be biafiiii for under different conditions. It will be a challenge cup, and the team winning it will have to win: it three years in succession to 2%-: come the owners ot it. Jr':).,, making a runaway race ot it. An- other good move this year is the eliminating ot the _ captains or managers of the different teams from the executive board, such as was the case last year. The chec- utive is composed ot three disin- terested men and their decision will be final. This does away with a lot ot lobbying, bickering and rag chewing, such as we witnessed in the executive sessions last year. This applies to all players on all teams. ‘ A silver trophy for the Fruit Belt League will be the prize for the team winning the league and already a prominent man of the district has offered to put up the coveted silver- ware. A meeting of the league heads will be held in Beamsville on Thursday night when a schedule of games for the season will be drawn up. Fans should not expect a club man- agement to train and develop a whole team of young, inexperienced players in one season and at the same time win a pennant, so do not let"voup optimistic ideas run away with your better judgment. .
