tw EBIGHT The ordinary mulberry tree is the ~ource of the food for the. European cad Oriental countries, and . when The new tree is the product of Dr Vartan K. Osigian, a native of Arâ€" menia, and a scientist of note in that country, and who has attracted uniâ€" versal attention to the foremost scientists of America in the producâ€" cion of the wonderful silktree, which is known as the Osigian Superâ€"Silk ‘ree. Dr. Osigian has so far betterâ€" cd the tree that produces the leave; for the sustenance of the silk worms, that it is now possible to produce ‘ood for them for an entire season ~vhich has not been possible up to hree years ago. ‘"The Osigian Superâ€"Silk Tree is the r~esult of a grafting process evolved ~y the doctor, and which he keeps ~rofoundly secret. The tree producâ€" s from three to five crops .« year of lsaves, which are utilized in feeding ~s3 many generations of the worms cjer season. Theâ€"ordinary silk tree, -v,vhicl’l is known as the common mulâ€" ~erry tree, â€" will produce but one ~rop of leaves perâ€" year, and when ‘hese are stripped to feed the worms, o not again throw out a fresh crop of leaves. The same methods that obtain in ‘taly, â€"Franc>~, Armenia and the }rient are to be utilized in Canada cor the production of the cocoons, with the exception that Canadian ‘armers will have the advantage of che inhabitants of the countries menâ€" ioned through the use of the improvy 5d tree that furnishes the nourishâ€" ment for the worms. Michael Basso, untll his death last year, court interpreter for the Italâ€" ians of Toronto, Ont., was the pionâ€" ser gilk farmer of Canada. It was ae who urged the Government to inâ€" ‘erest the agriculturists of Ontario in the cultivation of si.lk In supâ€" jort of his arguments that silk could uccessfully be grown in Canada, Mr. sassa added to the attractions of the Moronto Exhibition in the wear 1891 an exhibit of the worms he had »aiged. Many thousand people saw the worms in their natural state at hat time, performing their functions n silk production. The interpreter was perhaps the jest versed man in the art of seriâ€" :ulture in Canada at that time. His amily in Italy for generations had ;een engaged in the production of silk as a means of livelihood. There ire many Italian families in Canada :t the present time whoâ€" are well rersed in the cultivation® of silk, and vho will vouch for the statement hat it is one of the bestâ€"paying ‘rops of Italy. Silk worms live, perform their function of producing one cocoon each, into which they encase themselves, and die, all within 28 days. If the farmâ€" er hatches another crop of worms for the succeeding month, he would have to be assured of another crop of leaves whereon they could be fed. That assurance would be out of the question if the ordinary mulberry the leaves are all used up the possiâ€" The secret of the grafting and growing of the improved tree has been purchased by the Osigian Silk Corporation of Canada, Limited, from Dr. Osigian, who is under a guaranâ€" tee not to allow the secret to be sold or given in any way to European Or Oriental silk interests. f It has been established that the reâ€" turn possible per acre from the grow ing of gilk in Canada will reach from tree is to e depended upon but ,Ylth the new Osigian Superâ€"Silk treo it is possible to produce upwards of five crops of cocoons per season in Canâ€" ada, against one crop in, the silkâ€" producing countries of the world. THIS SALE BALBRIG THE IND iC ts aa MEN Re AY The complâ€"int which the bill is inâ€" tended to meet is to the effect that some fruiterers have taken advanâ€" tage of their exempted position to lay in a stock of .breakfast foods, canned goods, etc., and dispose of them after the regulation hour of closing for grocery stores. The orâ€" iginal legislotion along earlyâ€"closing lines included fruiterers within its scope, but the Curry amendment of last session exempted thom. s If passed by the Ontario legislaâ€" ture, a bill introduced last week by Alex. Lewis, Conservative member for Northeast Toronto, will further tighten the early closing byâ€"laws in Ontario. _ According to the terms of Mr. Lewâ€" is‘ bill, only such shops shall be exâ€" empted from the stipulations of the earlyâ€"closing byâ€"law as confine themâ€" selves exclusively to the sale of fresh fruits and vegetables. A great deal of discussion has been indulged in of late among farmers as to the possibility of the worms provâ€" ing to be a pest to trees, much in the same manner as the tussock moth and tent caterpillar. The 1loâ€" cal office when interviewsd recently stated that the worms are under no sircumstances allowed to leave the ‘confinement of their box~s in a room set apart for their habitation in the house of the farmers rearing them. When it is remember®d that the silk worm has been‘ carefully . guarded for centuries before Christ, it will be easily understood that habit has domesticated them to such an extent that they would be absolutely helpâ€" less in the open, and . that in the house they never crawl. ~ Persia had a record production of petroleum of 918,000 tons last year. Anoher great improvement is the fact that the Superâ€"Silk Worms proâ€" duce cocoons of eighteen separate and digtinct shades, ranging from the deepest black to the most delicate tints o fblues, pinks, mauves, rose, gold, etc. $500 to $700 per acre. While this is not possible from the first year, it is assured by the company | that the first year will bring returns of not less than $50 per acre, as the trees are the fastest growing of any tree in the world, and attain a height of five and six ?et from â€" a cutting the size of a lead pencil the first season. Leaves are produced on the new tree over ten times largâ€" er than those of the ordinary mulâ€" berry tree. Worms feeding on the leaves are much more vigorous, and produce almost twice the quantity of silk to the cocoon as those of the European and Oriental countries.
