Deep Ditches Dangerous :â€" _ The fool system of digging ditches, from either side and both sides of the new highway I have detoured through every sideroad from Vineland to the present blockade on the highway, and I never saw an Oofficial of the Township or a workman of the Township on any one of thegeAl'gadsâ€"except once. It just looks as if the officials and the councillors of the Township of Clinton had died of dry rotâ€"and had been thrown into the discard. During the past month or two I have valuable touring cars upsideâ€"down, in tation in saying that in due time the filling being used as a monument to th Trucks and automobiles were in the ditch, in every directionâ€"big, heavily laden Dominion Express truck had ‘dugâ€"herselfâ€"in‘ until it looked as if three teams of horses would not pull her outâ€"and she was still there the next day. & Tf there was any cause or reasonable grounds for the digging of such ditches, there would be some excuseâ€"but in fifty per cent. of the cases, there is absolutely no. need for a ditch so deepâ€"and it looks to me as I watched the men working on these ditches, that the only useful purpose they could possibly servé, was to provide public money to keep some men‘s families. & s s Instead of taking time by the forelock, as brainy men would do and prepare to take care of the travelling public in case of rainstormsâ€"they wait until the harm is all done befor e makijg a move of any kind. Let us take it for granted, for argument‘s sake, that through the Townâ€" ship of Clinton and North Grimsby, there is the need of a deep ditch on I have driven through the township of Clinton twice a day for 6 months â€"without missing a halfâ€"dozen days in that timeâ€"and I never saw a roadâ€" leveller, or a roadâ€"planerâ€"except oneâ€"in the entire six months. It would have been an easy matter and it would have been the right thing, for the commissioner to plane and keep planed each sideroad that the travelling public was forced to use as a detourâ€"road, after the work on the highway commenced. s 4s % § Highway Officials Not Alone in Their Negleet:â€" I must say also, that the Township of Clinton has been very lax in its actions in assisting the public on the detour roads. Not the slightest effort has been made by either the Council or the Road Superintendent to put the detour sideroads in shapeâ€"or to keep them in shape. They are like the hound who lost the hareâ€"by being just one jump behind. It is a strange thing to me that those in control of the highway are always ‘one jump behind.‘ se en $ k It is now up to the Department to make such arrangements with the contractors, as will allow the traffic to go through on the highwayâ€"this should be done, even the work has to be partially suspended, because the detours do more injury to the public than the completed highway ever can do in the way of benefit. Not only was it impossible to to drive an automobile or truck along this piece of road, with any degree of successâ€"but it was a difficult matter to keep a wagon or dray drawn by hors es upon it. . s s I drove over this and the hind wheels motorâ€"car would. With a heavy rainfall every Jew days it is nothing to force the traffic to leave the Jrighway and detour on m dumped on a mile of the highway it If a million tons of soft soap was culd not be in as bad shape as this halfâ€"mile of clay road was in. South, between King and Main Streets, and five doors north of the H. G. & B. Ry. line. Hamilton Ontarie The argument may be used that t hese ditches are intended to carry off the water, in March, when thesnow is going away and there is a freshet; and if it were not for the ditches, the roads would ‘be flooded with water. That argument is nil, in its application, when we remember that for four months, during the past summer, we drove over the foundation work on the new highway, often in a foot of waterâ€"and it did not seem to impede traffic in the least; in fact, I found that an auomobile runs much more smoothly over a rough stone road when it is covered with water than when it is dry. o o a, BIRDS STORE GRLIMSBY E §Mmmwmwm*ww*wwwwwwwm*w po e nooeennomnooneneeneoeetrnmeoneconec ooo ooo io reoooiiooeccmneoocrned 5 "BILLY THE GLASS MAN" gayg._ â€" â€" = But no such a ditch, is necessary on the north side of the roadâ€"if the water is stopped by the ditch on the south side of the road, there is no water to be handled by a ditch on the north side of the roadâ€"and conseâ€" quently there are fifty per cent. of the ditches unneccessary. To prove that many of the deep ditches on the south side of the rdad are unnecessary, the keen observer has only to drive along the highways afterâ€"two days rain, and take cognizance of the fact that there is no water in one of these ditches at allâ€"not even a little bit. 4 the south side of the road, to cut off the water that might seep three feet beneath the surface, from the mountain.
