By the county temporarily financing the proposition a saving oi ‘*soms $8,000 would be effected. C Councillor Welstead stated thfi@ Bradley Brothers figured on drawing the stone during the winter and that unless the road was repaired it would be in a deplorable conidtion. It would mean a large maintenance, he | said, and possible action for damages. Council were prepared‘ to pay their portion as the work progressed. ‘ "Rottenest in County" + Councillor Fry stated that the Merâ€" rittville road was the rottenest road in the county, that not one man ‘on the road from the hill toâ€"the bridge had threshed this year because the threshers could not travel the road. Councillor Lane, presiding as chairâ€" man of the Road Committee, assured the Commission that the council was quite willing to do something, but that the financial end would have to be carefully considered. .__ The members of the Commission | then retired. 5 Councillor Kemp st?,ted that. the County would have to "pay tke 4. He asked the Mayor if the city would be willing to advance their share of the cost. The Mayor replied that while that question was not raised at a meeting of the Finance Committee, held to dis cuss the question, he felt sure the Council were prepared" to pay their portion as the work progressed. Chairman _ Burgoyne introduced Mayor Lovelace. The Mayor stated he had taken the stand that during his term of office he would endeavor to bring the city and the county closâ€" er together. Welland and St. Cathâ€" arines, he said, should be brought closer together by a trunk road. The hill of the Merrittville road is in worse condition than any other ipece of road in the Niagara District. Alâ€" though the City Council have finanâ€" cial troubles, he said ,yet they felt that the year was so near an end that the request would be made witha view of applying part of it on next year‘s appropriation. There are many reaâ€" sons why the work should be done this year,he said. Really Impassable Councillor Haynesâ€""The Merrittâ€" ville road is really impassable."
