Clark, where the affairs of the season were brought to a successful close. . Mrs. Clark served a dainty tea during which Mrs. Harry Burkholder, Presiâ€" dent of the Association was presented with a siver flower basket by the members of the Association in appreâ€" ciation of her valuable work throughâ€" out the season. On behalf of the To: ronto Telegram she was presented with a beautiful leather case. Let, ters of thanks and appreciation to the Association were read from the Toâ€" ronto Telegram, Major Tolmie and the Soldiers Hospital Commission, for the great aid that the Association had been throughout the season in helping to entertain the convalescent soldiers that had been brought to the Beach on picnics by the Toronto Telegram. The Association were entertained at afternoon tea on Friday of last week by Mrs. Burkholder and a very pleasâ€" ant afternoon was spent. On Saturday August 28th, when the Macassa Gdocked in at the Beach Capt. "Winnie‘"‘ Corson was met by a delegation and requested to pay â€" a visit to the bowling green. When the popular navigator reached the green he was immediately surprised by a large crowd of Beach residents and presented by Mr. Wilkinson on behalf of the residents with several pieces of furniture, a silver carving set and several other piecces of silver, as a token of their esteem and appreciation of his courtesy and thoughtfulness during the past season. This presenâ€" tation was made on the eve of the Captain‘s marriage. Capt. Corson who was taken absolutely by surprise made a suitable little speech in which he thanked his many friends for their kindness. & saw one another in time to get stopâ€" ped before they collided and caused a catastrophe such as occurred at this same spot some few years ago. Apparently the motorman and conductor on the eastbund car misâ€" read their orders or forgot what they were or they would never have run jpast the ‘Bartonville call .box. Luckily the motorman on both cars Nothing has ever been seen in the papers about this narrow escaipe but it finally leaked out last week. The 11.10 car at night out of Hamilton was as usual loadeq pretty heavily on Tuesday night. iGood time â€" was being made, and when Bartonville was reached several passengers noted the fact that the car did not stop at the switch as it is usual for it to do but kept right on going. Over the brow of the Red Hill it went â€"and down the hill. When near the botâ€" tom the ibrakes and air were applied very forcibly by the motorman and the passengers were thrown in all directions about the car which came to a very sudden stop. When the passengers alighted to see what the trouble was they found another car westbound standing within a few feet of their car. The car backed to Bartonville and alloweq the west bound to zo on its way. During the past two ‘weeks some very pleasing events have taken place at GRIMSBY Beach, at which several presentations to _ Beachites were made. There are a good many pCeopic this section of the country thank their stars that they are alive tof for on Tuesday night, August 31 they had a narrow jescape, if from death from serious inj when an H. St. â€"Catharines, Sept. 6.â€"Dr. John Henry Comfort,..oldest medical man in Niagara district, is dead at the age of 93. He was born at Niagaraâ€"onâ€" theâ€"Lake and spent all or nearly a century of \life in that town and St. Catharines." He had a very large pracâ€" tise at one time, but dropped it years ago when he was appointed police magistrate for St. Catharines. He held the positior up to a dozen years ago, when deafness compelled him to give it up. Since then he had lived retired with his daughter at Port Dalâ€" housie, his principal occupation being fishing for sport. He was an authority on fishing and made hkis last catch of perch off the piers only a few weeks ago. His wife died some years ago. He was a genial, kindly man, greatly esteemed by hundreds whom he had helped. The farmers of Lincoln County are little interested in stock raising, i1 the number of entrants in that class at the Canadian National Exhibition can be taken as an indication. The County was only represented by four exhibitors, which shows a marked lack of interest in the livestock indus, try. As the banner county in Ontario Lincoln should lead in livestock as wel as in #Aruit, and, the showing made by the four exhibitors indizates that this County can succeed in raisâ€" ing livestock with the same success which marks the fruit industry. In competition with cattle from all over the anadian West the local stock won a large number of prizes, a fair illustration of what Lincoln farmers could do in the way of making the Niagara Peninsula as famous for live stock as it is for fruit.
