A moleâ€"colored . velour that was cleaned with salt was quite fresh looking again. Some common salt was warmed, rubbed on the hat with crusheq tissue, paper snd then brushed off with a stiff brush. White or light velours or felt hats can be cleaned *with powdered magâ€" nesia warmed, then rubbed on the hat, the reverse way of the grain by means of a piece of muslin. Leave the hat for a yhile, then shake off as much as possible of the powder angq brush off the remainder. Women whodare wise will also take acvantage of the spring sunshine t move some of t)l(he winter grime‘t& their furs. When the latter are YEr» costly indeed, they should always be sent to an experienced furrier to be cleaned or for anything else that reâ€" quires doing, but furs of average ‘goodness can quite well ‘be cleane« at home. _ So she decided to clean the old panama. Such cleaning is easy to do. Brush the hat well with a clean, fairly stiff nailbrush so as to get out as much of the dust as posâ€" sible. Make a thick paste with some powdered sulphur and water, apply it smoothty to the hat with a piece of old clean white rag, and leave unâ€" til dry. The brim of the hat should ;be flat on the table, and the crown may be stuffed with paper or put over an inverted ‘basin, so long as the latter is done without distending the crown. When dry brush off the paste with a stiff, clean brush, and, if all is well, the hat will look as good as new. If it is a very grimy article indeed, two applications may be required, but care must be taken to let the hat become thoroughly dry between. Another way of cleaning either a real or a good imitation panama hat is to make a paste with a crushed common salt and lemon juice, and ap ply it to the hat with a clean rag. Make some suds with pure white shredded soap and tepid water, and brush the "salted" hat with it, using a stiff clean nailbrush for the purâ€" puse. ‘Only a small portion of the hat should be done at a time, and the work must be kept as "dry" as posâ€" sbhile. Wipe o ff any superfluous soapsuds with a piece of white rag, and gently rub each portion of the hat as dry as can be immediately it is scrubbed. | of ‘bran CLEANING THE SUMMER HAT ‘"My panama hat is terribly shabâ€" by, but I shall not be able to get a& new one this summer,,‘ said a busiâ€" ness girl with a sighful look at & milliner‘s window in which the new summer straws were exhibited. Sunâ€"Bath for Furs _ â€" As a preliminary step for clea any furs, give them a goodâ€" sunâ€" â€"hang them out in the suns shake them in the sunshine, let latter literally get into the skin them. Longâ€"haired dark furs sh be cleaned with bran. Put the 1: into a tin and stand in the oven 1 warmed through. Then rub well the fur with the fingers, â€" wor against the fur. Shake off the and repeat the process using as n applications as are necessary : the ibran comes away clean. . The kitchen door is their easiest way in. They are attracted ‘by the odor of cooking and by the warm air that pours out. Here a wire screen door is most necessary. If that is not possible, a mosquito net screen must take its place. All doors and windows need similar treatment. Best of all treatâ€" ment for the kichen door is to build a porch and screen the three open sides, placing a screen door wherever it is most desired. This prevents flies from gathering on the sceréen door of the kitchen, to enter wh[en- ever it is onened. 4 It is time to swat the fly again. But better than "swatting" him (and her) is to prevent them from entering our homes to dwell among us. There are more beneficial sumâ€" mer visitors to be invited. & By way of stopping the fly before he begins see to the surroundings of the house. Of course, a fly is really a pretty and daintyâ€"looking thing if we feel ourselves at liberty to admire him. Not having microscopic eyes we cannot see the gifts he brings to our family on his fragile little person, gifts of typhoid, and so on. So his destruction in the house must be carâ€" ried on, with swatter, trap, and deâ€" structive powders and liquids. Pyreâ€" thrum powder or ‘bubach sprinkled everywhere in a room at night, doors and windows being closed, will reâ€" sult in the death or stupefaction of the flies by the morning. Then they are swept up and burned. A deâ€" structive liquid is a mixture of two tablespoonfuls of forty per_ cent. formaldehyde in a pint of equal, parts of milk and water. If this is set about the room in saucers it will atâ€" tract the flies and kill a good propor tion, provided there is no other food or water to attract them. A little island of bread in the middle of each plate, for the flies to alight on will make this more attractive. But keep baby away from this. It would upset the small digestion. There are simâ€" ple and pleasant fly offensives too. The fly doesn‘t like geranium, migon ette, helitrope or white clover. So keep these about. i Methods of fly destruction are many. Added to them, to make them effective, must be daily attention. certain extent, insist on getting inâ€" doors. Then "swat" them, trap them, poison them. ‘Not Ibecause you don‘t like to see them and because they spoil your house and household goods but because they are disease carriers. Think of how they peneâ€" trate into all sorts of dark and nause ous places, then fall ihto our tea or soup, or into the baby‘s milk.
