W. KIDD Senator Smith does not know I am writing this. If he did, perhaps he would get me a "job" with‘the gov- ernment if I would stop. a3tlt there are too few who (have given this end of the question any or much thought, and having landed on the article above m1oted it seemed like. a 'good chance to show, in a limited way, that a little thought, and some moral support to such advocates as the lo- cal Senator, would smoothen out some of the rough spots that both lo- cal and Federal governments are finding. Do not forget that you have a voice in the management of both of these systems, and also that you will have to pay a part of the cost of these systems. Also do not get the impression that this is intended in any way to indicate that there is inot room for both the Grand Trunk jand the Hydro road through the Nia- gara peninsula. It is to be hoped that there will be traffic for all that can come, but this is not the only "Neck of the woods." There are a good many miles of railway in On- tario that are now under the control of the Grand Trunk system, and which, if changed from steam to elec tricity, would not need any duplica- tion, but which at present can not give the service that is wanted and which the Hydro-Electric could give. These no doubt are the lines to which Senator Smith had reference Every little hamlet that has suffered in the past became the Grand Trunk as a steam line could not afford to give the service it thought it requir- ed, can be well served it Senator Bmith's idea is carried out,and many ot these to-day are crying aloud to the Hydro to come to them. And that the Hydro eventually would do if the Grand Trunk system is kept to the necessity " steam. The average fruit grower of this district thinks, and perhaps rightly so, that he is a little further ad- vanced than the average farmer of the country. Prove that thought a fact by giving the idea promulagated by Senator Smith some thought, and while thinking bear in mind that you own both systems. One as a Cana- dian, and the other as a "native" pf old Ontario. 0H BOY'. AND MILK " CENTS A QUART Montezuma, Mexico, March M.-- Septlets were born yesterday to the wife of Jesus Lopez, a private in the Mexican army. The arrivals are three girls and four boys, weighing about two pounds apiece. After he became a sevenfold papa, Lopez was given the privilege by the military commander to paint the town red, and go as tar as he liked. He is doing so at the present mom- ent, and going strong. -iihi; mathe; and Her seven child- ren were reported as doing splendid- ly. _ You own the Hydro-Electric sys- tem and you own the Grand Trunk system. Only that you and "dad" own the Trunk, and you and Cousin Bill own the Hydro. Now who are you 'boosting for? Your own little hole in the corner, like some of your neighbors we could tell you about, or for Canada as CANADA. Senator Smith sees it from the viewpoint of a Canadian, not from the one side only. You have got to support both systems. Why duplicate them? The idea of not letting your one hand Know what the other hand does may be alright from a charitable point of view, but in this case Senator Smith and those who think with him on this question are entitled to all the help that can be given them. A great many of you do not want to own, through your governments, any railway system, but you have them, and you will not have to live very long to see the day when you will be "tickled to death" (neither pun nor sarcasm intended), to know that you have a voice in the control ot two mighty important parts of the great- est part of this Canada ot yours and mine. Be sure that your left hand 'knows all about what your right hand is doing. The Hydro-Electric commission of Ontario has done wonderful things, they have grand and good projects in view, they will eventually have the greatest work of its kind in the world, tor we have the resources, and they have the right man at the head of it. But it is a foregone conclusion that even that far seeing man, Sir Adam Beck, has no desire to duplicate the Grand Trunk System if he has reason to be- lieve that that system insofar as prac tieahle, will be electrified, and give the service. (And perhaps buy pow- er from the Ontario Harliro-a11eetrie commission.) A patent for cutlery made of ham- boo has been granted a Japanese real dent of Seattle. (Continue, from page 1) Do you see anything "pessimistic" in his remarks, Why are you and everybody else in the neighborhood so anxious to see the Hydro Electric railroad built? For additional ser- vice. Or rather that is what the Ysensible man wants it, for. Addi- itional service. Now will someone rise and explain why we can not have that additional service if the Grand Trunk were changed to an electric system, capable of handling the present traffic and the additional that would accrue. You think per- haps electrification would not help. Twenty years ago the New York Cen- tra1 line was changed to electricity into New York City and for a great many miles outside. And they are going ahead with it, to eventually have the system unified. The Chi- cago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railway company has installed electricity tor (hundreds ot miles on its heaviest traffic, (through the Cascade Moun- tains), and other big roads are talk- ing ot it, and only waiting tor better conditions in the country to follow it 'up.
