Buck‘s idea is the right one. the occupant of an insane asylum he could possibly work it, over all 16 Couid possiDly work it, overiall of Europe. w oo 8e oke o ok It is a most amazing thing that in all the war against the German people, but all against the in second, who has gone out (in the slang expression west) "to paint the town red and shoot un all af T W. A. Wentworth, commonly known as "Buck," covered the whole situaâ€" tion in half a dozen words, which he expressed to me before he left with the Second Dragoons to go on his second overâ€"seas expedition, when he said, "It is too bad that there are no insane asylums in Germany, because if there were, this wanr never would have taken place." It is a regrettable fact that the German people, who are pleasure loving, contented, thrifty people, should be driven their neighbors, the French, Belgians and British and being selves, to satisfy the fighting lust of a maniac like _ Willia Germany Despatches from England intimate that Kitchener will not allow _ any inexperienced troops to go on the field and if the colonials reach the firing line it will be after a fierce course of training. the strain. which is now being placedv u;OI-lvtl‘léILI-l“ Amongst those who have enlisted are thousands of men who saw service in South Africa. These men are either Canadians who enlisted for that war or British reservists who saw service or soldiers who have served their time and received their discharge certificates. Men of this class will be ready for the field after a few weeks‘ training. Besides the duty of sending their sons to fight for the empire, Canadians have still another duty and that duty is to remain calm and sensible under WA on o o S e n e n o o t ae y C 2 MJ that they gain Canadians are responding promptly to the call to arms. Over thirty thou sand men have already enlisted on a call for twenty thousand, for the first contingent. These men will mobilize at ValCartier, Quebec, within the next week and will be reâ€"selected and sent forward, probably to England, to _ do home garrison duty and get experience and perhaps go to the continent later, if the war continues. At the present moment it would appear that the German plan is to crowd gradually forward by sheer force of numbers, and although beaten in every skirmish by huge numbers, they are pressing on from behind gradually driving the lighter forces of the Belgians and French, in the hope that they can outâ€"flank them and surround them or defeat them in drawn battle and march on to Paris. The fighting for the past ten days would indicate that this will be a man‘s job and the Germans will earn with blood and death every foot of territory PE ud The defence of their country by the Belgians is unprecedented in the anâ€" nals of war history. As far as we can judge from despatches, the Belgians have outâ€"fought and outâ€"manoeuvred the Germans at every point. After days and days of repeated onslaughts on the Belgian forts at Liege, the Gerâ€" mans were forced to give up the fight after suffering enormous losses in dead, wounded and prisoners taken. Up to date it would appear that the Austrians are fighting without their hearts in the job or else they are not very anxious to get heavily involved in war. When war was first declared it was taken for granted that Austria would eat Servia up at a single bite. After three weeks of fighting, Servia makes the announcement that there is not an Austrian on Servian soil,, although later despatches declare that the Austrians are shelling Belgrave and have the city in ruins. A remarkable thing about the whole war are the two events that stand out with great brilliancy, namely, the valiant stand taken by the Belgians against the Germans in the west, and the valiant stand taken by the Servians against Austria, in the east. On the eastern frontier, Russia has mobilized two million men and is marching on Germany and Austria and unless Germany reaches Paris (which is her ultimate object) very short}}f, Qhe chances are that she will never reach it, as it will not be lbng until she will have to turn fle;' attvéflgionuf;;);{l the west in order to save the east. ~ in the Mediterranean Sea the fighting line has been driven up into the Adriatic Sea on the east side and Italy, and the French and British â€" warâ€" ships have probably got the Austrian warships driven to bay, and in the near future we are sure to hear of a conflict.â€"Already there are reports that four Austrian warships have met disaster. It is supposed that the British fleet has the German fleet bottled up, proâ€" bably near the Keil canal and are holding it there while British cruisers are sweeping the North Sea, the English Channel and Atlantic Ocean, removing every danger in order that the great merchant vessels and passenger ships trading between Great Britain and America can once more go safely down to sea. In the North Sea a marvelous thing is taking placeâ€"the two greatest navies in the world have apparently disappeared from sight and for ten days nothing has been heard of either of them as far as the general public in Canada knows. f ad The number of British troops that have gone to the scene of war and where they are located on the battle line has never been devulged, but withâ€" out a doubt, Kitchener has poured in British troops as fast as possible and has located them where they can be of the most use. The forces of the opposing armies are made up of Belgian, French and probably British troops. In the stretch of country across Luxemburg and Belgium to the Holâ€" land line is stretched an immense army of Germans on the one side and the allies on the other side. Every foot of territory from Switzerland on the soutmâ€"east to Holland on the northâ€"west is fully occupied by the two opposing â€" armies. All the French frontier from Luxemburg to Switzerland is occupied by what appears now to be a victorious army. The French have won every engagement (if we can depend on the despatches) except one, when the Germans drove them back from Muelhaussen for a few days. A spectacle is now presented in Europe that has never been presented in the world before, namely two armies fronting each other in battle array in a line extending continuously for two hundred and sixtyâ€"six miles. There is absolutefy no excuse for the war The very fact that so many men could be mobilized and put into active service in so short a time, proves conclusively that preparations for war have been going on not only for months but probably for years. It seems almost incredible that within two weeks after the declaration of war there could be fully six million men under arms and in battle array. Gerâ€" many has two million men in the field. Russia has two million men in the field. Austria has half a million men either fighting or marching to fight and France, Belgium, Servia and Great Britain must have fully a million and a half men under arms. F It seems impossible to talk about anything but war, as events have been moving so quickly in Europe during the past ten days that they have overâ€" shadowed everything else in the whole world. j The two TERMSâ€"Subscribers in Canada $1 per year in advance.
