MAKING MOULDS â€" This jolt squeeze moulding machine shakes and squeezes sand into place around a pattern to form @ mould into which molten aluminum is poured. Operator Bob Corken has been an Alcon employee since 1941. Many Etohicoke and Lakeshore residents are probably unaware that the largest aluminum founâ€" dry in Canada is located on their own doorstep. The mould can be used for only a single casting but is relaâ€" tively inexpensive. This method is used where only a small numâ€" ber of pieces are to be produced and also for production of large size castings. In permanent mould castings, molten aluminum is poured into metal moulds. After the metal has solidified the mould is opened up and the casting removed. Beâ€" cause of the cost of met&l moulds, this process is used for larger quantity runs. To make a die casting, molten metal is forced under a pressure into a steel die. Pressures of several thousand pounds per square inch are used to obtain special properties in the casting. This process is used for the largâ€" est quantity runs,. The first two of these processes have been in use at Etobicoke Works since the plant was opened in 1943. The die casting method was moved from the Sterling Road plant in 1956. During the Second World War Canada‘s entire aluminum indusâ€" try was committed to the prodâ€" uction of defence items, mostly for aircraft where~ aluminum‘s light weight. strength and corroâ€" sionâ€"resistant properties are viâ€" tally important. At this time, Etobicoke Works production was made up entirely of a variety of structural parts for aircraft of all kinds. Etobicoke Works is also well equipped wth machining and inâ€" spection facilities. â€" All castings are subject to careâ€" ful inspection. In addition to chemical and spectrographic means to check the analysis of the metal, the plant also has equipment to check the metallurâ€" gical structure of the castings by means of Xâ€"rays plus metalloâ€" graphic laboratory facilities. Etobicoke Works is also an imâ€" portant centre for investigation into casting alloys and casting techniques for both Alcan and the parent company, Aluminium Limited with its subsidiary comâ€" panies in more than 30 countries around the world. All of theseare reasons why Etobicoke Works is called on to provide advice and assistance and for the production of aluminum castings not only for companies in Canada but also in the United States and many other countries. Visitors from these countries freâ€" quently tour the plant to observe and discuss the latest in casting techniques.
