Are Weston merchants fighting for survival only to have the Metropolitan Toronto Parking Authority cut off . streets to customer parking? This was the question asked of Weston Counâ€" cil, Monday, by a worried busiâ€" nessmen from Jane Street. William Pletzer, owner of the Alton Marine store at 1786 Jane Street, in a letter to Council, and through ‘a personal visit to the Council meeting, Monday, told Council of his greatest worry â€" that Metro will return "No Parking" signs to the street in front of his store. | The letter to council, signed1 by Mrs. and Mr. Pletzer, asked | Council for assurance Metro | would not place ‘No Parking‘‘ signs _ on â€" Jane _ Street . in front of his store and three others, thus cutting off the only parking space available in the| area, and eventually, trade in the area. \ Mayor George Bull, giving little assurance, said, "We can‘t tell what Metro will do. The parking situation in the area does not appear to be too hopeâ€" ful." Metro "Heartless" On Town Parking Worried Weston Merchant Tells Council He said the building of a laneway behind the chain of stores may be the "salvation of the area," but Mr. Pletzer told Council the land needed for the lane is not available for purâ€" chase. Parking is now only restrictâ€" ed during rush hours on Jane Street, but "No Parking" at any time signs have been put up once on Jane and may be reâ€" placed. "We should beat some sense into the Metro Parking Authorâ€" ity," Councillor Ted Ault said, The situation is now satisfactory with no parking in rush hours." He said it should be left this way, and added, "If we can‘t use the land for commercial use we can‘t use it for anything else." â€""(;,ounrillor William Perry addâ€" ed, "We should do all we can to protect our business men." Mr. Pletzer‘s questions will be taken to the traffic commitâ€" tee of Town Council and to Metro for study. Mr. Pletzer‘s letter, which follows, underlines some of the problems of many businessmen in Weston, and a growing attiâ€" tude of resentment by businessâ€" men who have locations borderâ€" ing Metro roads. "We take the liberty of tellâ€" ing you that eight years ago we sold our home, a bungalow in Mt. Dennis. and with our equity of $7,000.00. from that sale we made a downâ€"payment on a store and apartment on Jane Street in Weston. "Since that time we have worked hard and struggled to build up our business, make a living for ourselves and pay taxes to the Town of Weston and getting our building nearly paid for. "As you are aware, we like all the other business people on Jane St.. have struggled to surâ€" vive over those years of reconâ€" struction:> trunk water mains, water mains. gas mains and the most devestating the 1961 road widening during which the road was completely closed all durâ€" ing our business season and that we had to carry 150 lbs. Outâ€" board motors over holes and piles of dirt to side streets, and we had to arrange with people on the side streets to. enable us to equip boats delivered there â€" this all costing us monâ€" ey and our health yet we made no money last year and in spite of our business being cut off our tax bills came in just the same, of course with no allowâ€" ance. â€" We also remember the Pelmo bridge and the bridge between it and Wilson being built â€" that end of Jane was closed and as there is no other way thru‘ to Wilson â€" hardly any traffic came through Jane and so affecting our business â€" yet we still have that part of Jane to be widenâ€" éd and once again further setâ€" backs in our business. "We think you must agree that we have had a tough row to hoe over the last few years but have worked â€" that much harder, have managed to sur vive always with that future dream of what a swell street Jane St., will be and maybe exâ€" cellent for business. "NOW â€" we are fighting to | survive again. Metro seems det-i ermined to have Jane Street a ‘NO PARKING‘ streets. Is lhls‘ what we have managed to sur-‘[ vive for? i "What value is our building â€"â€" a store with no access to the rear â€"â€" and ‘No Parking‘ signs out front. We have about $10,â€" 000.00, equity in this building now â€" apart from our business, and we feel if this ‘No Parking‘ law goes through we have lost not only our business location and our home but also our life savings â€" as who would buy our Building from us if we tried to locate elsewhere" Is this what Metro is trying to!do to resiâ€" dents and tax payers of Weston? + "When we bought our store the builder said he was trying to build stores from ours No. 1786 to the corner of John and then a laneway would go throâ€" ugh but this never materialized and somehow a Weston lot on William Street was sold by the Town and a bungalow now sits where the laneway should go through from Jane to William. "However, at that time we had a wide dirt boulevard in front of the store and ample parking on it â€" now after waiting for the beautiful Jane Street enâ€" visaged during the recent dirt, dust, holes and closures we find we have nothing but a dangerâ€" ous speedy expressway out front and the Metro Council‘s ruthâ€" less, heartless placing of ‘No Parking‘ at any time out front â€" though we must say after long discussions personally and by phone. with Mr. Cass the ‘No iParking' signs are now down and we have parking except lduring the rush hours, which we understand and is quite acâ€" ceptable to us. "Our building was built for an â€" apartment | upstairs â€"â€" a permit for this was issued to the builder, but we presume for price reasons he made the store smaller and a three room apartment in the rear. After all these years, we feel we are in the position to build upstairs and so make our living quarters more of a home and enable us to open the ground floor store through to the back. However, we don‘t want to put our hardâ€" earned savings into building an apartment on this building if any time Metro‘s ‘No Parking‘ ban can once again cut off our business and make our real estate valueless â€" it would be like throwing good money after \bad. In withâ€"holding the permission Councillor Ted Ault told Weston Council, "Several years ago the town approved a similar appliâ€" cation for a variety store in the area, but the Ontario Municipal Board turned it down for the area because of residents‘ comâ€" plaints." Town Buys Camera For Record Of Tree Removals Councillor Lindsay Cott said, "Such a store can be a benefit or a nuisance. The kids may hang around it or it can become untidy." h Mayor George‘ Bull couldn‘t see "any objection," but Councilâ€" lor Wesley Boddington said the residents "should be given a chance to speak up on it." For the past éight years the premises were used as a dryâ€" cleaning plant and also a men‘s bat store. Prior to that it was a grocery store. The letter to council was signed by Leo Rotenberg, of Lambton Ave. Toronto 9. The Town of Weston will keep a photographic record of tree reâ€" moval and trimming, when the Director of Parks, H. G Wilson, buys a Polaroid Camera for town use. « Town Council okayed a request from Mr. Wilson to purchase a camera for use of the parks deâ€" partment and the Public Works Department . According to Mr. Wilson, We receive almost daily requests for tree removal or trimming. With such a camera with its 10â€"second development of a print, enables us to take ‘on the spot‘ photoâ€" graphs and with a china markâ€" ing pencil show the limbs to be removed, or the tree to be taken down, and its exact location.
