As Chairman of the Library Board I would like to say that Council has been most progresâ€" sive in its attitude toward libâ€" rary services. The only difficulty is that the funds available from public sources cannot possibly meet the enthusiastic demand of the people of the township for books and it is going to take help from the citizens of North York to see that the bookmobiles d:lrl\"t go out empty before the 1 The North York Public Libâ€" rary Board was created just about two years ago. At that time the only Library service in the township was given by a Library Association made up of devoted people but with limiâ€" ted resources. The Association operated a small library in a room in the Community Hall at Willowdale and one bookmobile with an inadequate stock of Five Italian immigrants, all of whom worked for a North Yorth York contractor, appeared in court last week to complain that the pay checks given to them by their employer, James Macâ€" Donnell, had all bounced. Drive SAFELY The tournament will be held at various playing fields in North York, but all teams will assemâ€" ble at Lions‘ Park (Ledbury), Districtâ€"(Avenue Rd.â€"west on St. Germaine Avenue) (Avenue Rd. and Lawrence Ave.), to regâ€" ister at 9.30 a.m. In two years, twg new bookâ€" mobiles have been added to give North York the largest bookâ€" mobile fleet in Canada, better quarters have been found for the original Willowdale Branch, the old engineering building is being used as administration headquarters, building sites have been purchased in various parts of the township, staff has grown from six to fiftyâ€"two carefully selected able and energetic emâ€" ployees, service has been extenâ€" ded to bookmobile stops throughout the township, book stock has risen from about six thousand to sixty thousand and the book circulation has risen from thirty thousand to a preâ€" sent rate of seven hundred and fifty thousand a year. North York Amateur Softball Association is sponsoring a Pee Wee tournament on August 3rd. In two years an interested and understanding Council has boostâ€" ed the annual Library budget from practically nothing to $195,000.00. At the same time, Provincial grants have .risen to over $22,000.00. But to keep step with the expansion of service, made possible by the expansion of facilities and made necessary by the tremendous demand of the people, the Library Board would require a further $50,â€" 000.00 this year. Employer‘s Pay Checks Bounced It is obvious that North York has gone about as far as it can go for this year. The Library Board has put into service 20,â€" 000 new books already this year but it looks also as though it has gone about as far as it can go for the year; and still our Libâ€" rary service is only a fraction of what might be called adeâ€" quate. (Our book stock should be five times its present size.) Softball Assoc. * To Hold Pee Wee Tournament The only hope of keeping the supply anywhere near the deâ€" mand is the possibility of the Board receiving contributions from service clubs, Home and School Associations and other generous agencies and individâ€" uals for the purpose of purâ€" chasing books. +.
