It is here thaté "Culture" or, more simply, social | education steps in and creates the | variations and differences between | human beings, that we know. The environment in which an individual | lives largely determines his deâ€"| in the wilderness. Research and investigation into the essential character of human nature over the past fifty years has been |eadâ€" ing rapidly away from this ancient belief. The new concept has treâ€" mendous _ significance _ for the future of mankind, for it means essentially that the ideas about human nature‘s innate belligerance and | aggressiveness upon â€" which individuals and nations both have formulated . their _ policies _ are dangerously misleading, If human nature is not inherently warlike then the world is not doomed by destiny to a continuing round of progressively _ more _ destructive wars. There is hope for a peaceâ€" ful, ordered world, if man will begin with the premise that such a world is possible and not opposed by man‘s inherent nature. On the contrary, says modern science, human nature is not inâ€" herently good or evil, warlike or peaceful. In fact, human nature in the newborn infant, far from being a set of human or racial characterâ€" istics, consists simply of an ability to learn. Unlike animals which react by the automatic operation of instincts over which they have no conscious control, the human baby is almost entirely devoid of instinet. The baby is, in one sense, only potentially a human being. If he were isolated from all human contacts and yet kept alive he would grow up into something very much unlike the human being we know. Furthermore, says Prof. Ashley, this primary human nature (ie. ability to learn) in all men is "fundamentally similar", There are no "naturally" superior and inferior races. lt is here that How many times have you heard this old chestnut this week? What does modern science say about its validity ? "You Cannot Change Human Nature!" "False!" says Prof. M. F. A.
