Material assistance cannot go on forever, We must help the millions of illit« erate people in this world to help themselves and only through eduâ€" cation can the UN do this. Just recently UNESCO (United Nations _ Education â€" Social and Cultural Organization) took some practical steps towards this probâ€" lem. UNESCO plans to establish over the next few years six centres of fundamental education in five regions of the world. One of these centres in Patzcuaro, Mexico, has been in operation for some time. Now, the purpose is to train groups of teachers from the countries in the region in such things as the methods of combating illiteracy, education in health and sanitation and nutrition, problems of soil erosion and better farming, and so on. The groups of l?eaehers will ign back to their own countries and there carry the process a stage further, training more teachers, and establishing fundamental eduâ€" cation work. The extent of the problem is illustrated by the fact that there are some 12 hundred million people who cannot even read or write in the five regions in which UNESCO is going to estabâ€" lish these centres. Although this is a long range plan it is amazing to hear the progress that has alâ€" ready been made in Mexico in comâ€" batting illiteracy and promoting fundamental education. Perhaps through this plan we will find a common meeting ground for all people, and a basis for world understanding. A neutral fish flour, with a proâ€" tein content of better than 89 per cent, has been developed for use in fortifying cereal starch foods, notably wheat and mealie flours. The fish meal is tasteless, odourâ€" less, does not prejudice the colour of the product and has an effective life of 90 days. With the basic food of the native peoples being corn flour, the new fish protein meal promises to aid the dietary of the country, assist the fish inâ€" dustry and, with South Africa deâ€" pendent on imported wheat for doâ€" mestic milling, reduce the need for ifm-nign exchange to â€" purchase \wheat. 12 €°\ United Nations Corner The heart is one part of the human machine that never seems to be in neutral gear. &7637 _ WESTON, MU. 196 Prompt Results Fish Flour
