Barrett PHONE 65â€"Wâ€"2 TIMES AND GUIDE, WESTON WESTON Federation sent an urgent telegram to the Ontario Chess Association requesting it to withdraw its bid to hold the Canadian Chess Chamâ€" pionship ‘Tournament in Toronto this year. David Creemer, chairman for the BCCF event cabled: #BCCF fully prepared to sponsor 1951 Canadian Championship Tournament. Financial arrangeâ€" ments completed. Would appreciate if OCA withdraw bid for the tournament. This British Columbia first and only opportunity. Please do not spoil it." The Ontario Chess Association replied: The above means therefore that \ha OCA, has generously coâ€" operated with the BCCF, located at the extreme western limits of our great Dominion. ‘This event will be its first in the history of this famous province. We have no doubt but that it will be an outâ€" standing success It is hoped that this Canadianâ€"wide championship tournament being held away out west will give an important stimuâ€" las to chess throughout Canada. We extend the BCCF, every luck and good wishes. "Your position appreciated. Under circumstances OCA, willingâ€" ly agrees withdraw bid. This meets with approval of President Henry Loose, OCA. Best luck and good wishes. â€" Frank Anderson, secreâ€" tary, OCA. The Weston Chess Club members generously donated toward the Lionel Joyner Fund, to enable him to be sent to Birmingam, England, to play in his first International Chess Tournament, and wish him every success. The president, A. E. Warren, and all the members are looking forward with interest for reports of Lionel‘s progress in this event and trust he may bring home the laurels to Canada. To date, Ontario has donated approximately $60.00 toward the Joyner Fund. His ticket has been purchasedâ€"so that part is safely overcome. Mikhail Botvinnik, USSR, is having a terrific struggle to retain the title of world champion. David Bronstein at the 22nd game was one point aheadâ€"11%â€"10%. In the 23rd game however Botvinnik drew even for a score of 11%â€"11%. If Botvinnik draws the 24th and last game he retains his title. If Bronâ€" stein wins, David Bronstein will be the winner by only one half & point. The Toronto Chess League holds its annual spring Chess Festival tonight, May 17th, at the Central YMCA, College St., Toronto. The triâ€"city chess match beâ€" tween Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, will be held on May 20th. Playing for Toronto will be Frank Anderâ€" son, Ontario champion; Z. Sarosy, runnerâ€"up for the championship; C. A. Crompton, N. Glasberg, N. Kuttis, H. Ridout. Below we give a game played in the Montreal championship 1950. . This is necessary due to the large enâ€" rolment this year. It promises to be a successful softball season due to the friendly rivalry among the different teams. Herb Warren. Chinese Tanker Requisitioned The Govenor of Hong Kong has used his powers to requisition a Chinese tanker, to prevent its use by Chinese and North Korean troops for carrying oil to Korea. The tanker, the Yung Hao, 15,000 tons, originally Japanese, had been sunk off Formosa towards the end of the Pacific war. It was salved and towed from Formosa in 1948, after which it was under repair at Kowloon docks at Hong King. §X 0 Wel P.Q3 Nâ€"K4 PxP Bâ€"KN5 6 CARS Better Service || BARTH‘S uon‘ *‘** [| se on Winder‘s Taxi 111 or Zone 4â€"700 Senior Public Nâ€"N5 Blackâ€"Wiltiams 17. During the past dfi- there has been a substantial in family formation in Canada, as a result of the heightened number of marâ€" riages and increased birth rates during the war years and particuâ€" larly since 1945, and of the postâ€" war immigration flow with its large proportion of family units as compared with immigration in preâ€" vious periods. At the same time the average size of familiesâ€"paraâ€" doxical as it may seem in view of the gain in birth ratesâ€"has shown a downward trend. * As defined for cenus purposes, a family consists of at least two inâ€" dividuals living together in the reâ€" lationship of husband, wife, and children, or of parent and unmarâ€" ried children, and a few cases of man or woman with guardianship of child or ward. Ten years ago, according to the 1941 census, there were 2% milâ€" lion families in Canada, comprisâ€" ing nearly 10 million individuals. In 1949 a sample survey indicated, the number had risen to nearly 3%4 million, comprising almost 12 milâ€" lion persons. While the number of families is increasing, the average size of the family is decreasing in Canada. The average number of persons per family was 3.9 in 1941 and 3.7 in 1949. In rural areas where famâ€" ilies tend to be larger than in urâ€" ban areas the average size of the family in 1941 was 4.3 persons, but for urban areas it was only 3.7 persons. Largest average family size in both urban and rural areas in 1941 was in Quebec (4.2 and 5.3 respecâ€" tively), with rural New Brunswick (4.6) also well above the allâ€"Canâ€" ada average. At the other end of the scale, British Columbia famiâ€" lies had the smallest average size (3.2 urban and 3.5 rural), followed by those of Ontario (3.4 urban and 3.8 rural). . The average number of children, per family at home varied considâ€" erably from province to province in 1941, British Columbia had the smallest number (1.3) and Quebec the largest (2.4). For Canada as a whole the average was 1.6 in urban localities and 2.2 in rural districts. Only in rural Quebec did the averâ€" age number of children in the famâ€" ily exceed three.
