Friday, April 6, the pupils of Weston Senior Public School were invited to attend a concert at Masâ€" sey Hall. Of course nearly everyâ€" one was glad to go. When we got there, we were late, so we missed the first two pieces. Under the direction of Sir Ernest MacMillan, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra played many fine compositions inâ€" cluding In the Hall of the Mounâ€" tain King, Londonderry Air and The Blue Danube Waltz. The proâ€" gram ended at approximately four o‘clock. We all certainly appreâ€" ciated this opportunity to hear this good music and hope it will become a yearly event. The Minstrel Show Soon all the excitement and chatter will be all over for another year. Since the Easter holidays, a lot of hard work and‘time has been spent to put together a minstrel show for the public. Mr. Allen and Mr, Brum, two of the teachers of the senior public school, have given much of their time to help a large group of the pupils assemble a show. Practices have been held morning, noon and night. Candy and soft drinks will be sold after the show. We all hope that everyâ€" one who attends the show will go away singing the praises of those who made such a novelty possible. Helen Millen, Form 6. Elmer the Safety Elephant A boy near Humber Heights School was unfortunately hit by a car and seriously injured. So after almost three months Elmer had to be taken down. Elmer could not be taken down on the day of the cereâ€" mony because he was all wet from the rain and so they waited a couple of days before taking him down. Sergeant Hill gave us a speech on safety habits and safety rules. Humber Heights Last week several of the memâ€" bers of the Audubon Club went on a bird hike with our teacher, Mr. MacKenzie. Plunkett. The old Indian medicine man created an interest in this particuâ€" lar work when a report appeared that Nevada Indian.medicine men were using a medicine made from a plant as a contraceptive, This plant Research With | Weed May Help | | Cancer Viectims ©uNm Experimental results to date inâ€" dicate that the effect of the plant substance is not permanent but lasts only while treatment is given. If the plant substange acts the same way in humans as in animals then it should have a marked inâ€" hibitory effect on such types of cancer as breast and prostate. Dr. Plunkett obtains his plants from Nevada where they grow as weeds, but to provide an adequate supply for his experiments a local variety of the plant is being grown near London, and it is hoped that this type of plant will be as efâ€" fective as those imported from Neâ€" vada tute. is now being investigated and it has been found to have a unique action in that it inhibits certain pituitary hormones which are reâ€" sponsible for normal sexual deâ€" velopment. Dr. Plunkett is working in an effort to purify the crude plant material in order to have a pure substance to pursue his clinical exâ€" periments. It is well established that certain pituitary and sex horâ€" mones have a definite effect on cancerous tumours and much of the present day treatment of these tumours is directed towards the inâ€" hibition of these hormones, As yet there has been no drug available which has a direct inâ€" hibitory effect on these pituitary and sex hormones. This plant (Lithospermumâ€"ruderale) has withâ€" in it a substance which directly inâ€" activates the pituitary hormones involved, which results in a cessaâ€" tion of the activity of the sex glands. | . 5 . â€" This experiment is under the diâ€" rection of Dr. R. As an alternative to the everâ€" popular string of pearls, for exâ€" ample, the new idea is to wear a rhinestone necklet as a compleâ€" ment to the tailored suit and trim, highâ€"throated blouse.
