Trout fishing and the Robins will soon be with us. But even at that take heed, you who drive at a fast clip! Beware of the spots on our romds that are soft. Drive with caution all the time, but use a little extra these next few weeks, This columnist, a nonâ€"car driver, has nothing but praise for the vast majority of drivers. He likes to see the family man;with his wife and kids aboard, out for a drive and a roadside picnic during the days of summer. He admires the sane driving of those mighty trans s that travel the highâ€" ways ghd the whole host of comâ€" m travellers, too. ‘ type he is indeed wary of, i zoot suit type who seem to speMiglize in recklessness and who are only happy when they are disâ€" regarding care, courtesy and comâ€" mon sense, This is the type that one spots in the evenings, on Saturdays and Sundaysâ€"not out far afield but close to home. And Tâ€"N often reads the press columns depicting the accidents this type of driver incurs. Roll on the day when these mere lads will take unto themselves a greater sense of responsibility and then the roads will be that much safer for all. It is indeed joyful news to know‘ that Peel County Roads will be paving two sections of their propâ€" erty soon, This will delight many of the Weston and Maiton folk. The sections to be treated thus are the Malton to No. 10 Highway and Malton north to Caledon East. This will open up a grand picnic area on the Credit river. What a delight to be able to drive to Meaâ€" dowvale on a smooth and dustâ€"free road or have a choice of two ways of hard surfaced roads to Brampâ€" ton and points beyond. Your columnist for years now has been asked, "Why don‘t you cycle over the Rockies ‘and see the Pacific Ocean?" Well, that day has yet to come and until it does, he prefers to see Ontario first, His BOYS »:GIRLS 5 JOHN ST., WESTON LET US OVERKHAUL YOUR BICYCLE NOW Roc-dy For Those Grand Days Ahead Expert Workmanship at a Reasonable Price. .__ Free Pickâ€"Up and Delivery WILFE‘S CYCLE & SPORTS ‘15¢ | Lady Borden Ice Cream .. 48¢ Production of deepâ€"mined coal in Britian last year totalled 204.1 milâ€" lion tons compared with 202.7 milâ€" lion tons in 1949. travels have taken him ‘into well nigh every corher of Ontario save that beautiful area around Fort William and the lakeland paradise to its north. Fellow travellers! If you have not already done so, visit the Bruce Peninsula this 1951. You will leave Wiarton with happy memories and pass along that forest clad road, and on to Tobermory, 51 miles to the north. Ferry yourselves and car to Manitoulin, across that lovely island, the largest fresh water one in the world at that, and so on up to McKerrow, along a road that you will never regret driving. If your time is short, back via North Bay and No. 11, or better still, along the Ottawa river road. CITY PHONE MU. 4593 Anyway, this is but a suggesâ€" tion, probably well endorsed by many, especially by a muchâ€" travelled man whose home is on Robert street in Weston. _ Finally, a word of advice to the parents of the young. Dozens will be counting on a hefty cycle mileâ€" age on Good Friday! Their bicycles today are stored away and their muscles ready for any but a long cycle trip. Ask them to take it easy for a start and use every preâ€" caution whilst aâ€"wheel, Everyone will then be happy. ‘The Department of Health has issued the following adâ€" vice on how to prevent the flu. It brought back memories of the Easter Festival the fine presentation of the oratoricals and the work of the leaders in music. Many have passed away, Some have lived to see the splendid accomplishments as a direct result of the foundation laid. Massey Hall has been the centre for this whole great metropolitan area, The late Dr. Torrington, when leading the Oratorical lament, said that it was necessary to bring in American orchestras and soloists for the works. He would have been thrilled to see the talent that has been competing during the past two weeks and the two grand concerts that were given this past week. It is the climax of over a half century work by devoted men and women. Those who know the value of the work done in our schools and various societies praised it very highly. Those who have been here to adjudicate during the festival were loud in their favourable comments, This whole area is more and more musical minded, What can better the conditions of life than a fuller appreciation of music. We toâ€"day &re enjoying the ‘fruit, of those people who had the foresight to build Massey Hall and tin;-o“wiomht-ve.stir'nulra';{ study of music. Therefore be more expressive to see that Massey Hall is given every encouragement to carry on the work it has done so well. j Humber Heights On Tuesday, F';bruary 20th, the Triple Trio from our school went to Eaton‘s Auditorium. There were twelve groups to compete against. The girl‘s choir went down on February 21. A bus was chartered for transportation. There were sixty girls in the choir. They came fourth with seventyâ€"nine points. On February 27 the boys choir also went to Eaton‘s Auditorium by bus. The groups did very well under the instruction of our music teacher Miss Dumbleton. Betty Patterson, Grade VIII Report Cards Humber Heights report cards are issued here three timés a year. The first one was at the 1st week in December. This one is for the 1st week in March. Although most of the reports will be given out, so many were away for tests that some reports will be given out Tn week when these people complete their tests. 2 ‘There is keen competition in the upper part of the class to see who will be amongst the first eight. Even in the lower part of the class most children are trying hard to get at least a C which means a pass mark. We hope everyone gets & good report. _. 22. Stray Thoughts About Matters of Public Concern Moge o Eomcs Dianne Harris. This week is "Education Week in Canada". Over a quarter os a billion dollars is spent annually by the taxpayers of Canada to maintain their thirtyâ€"five thouâ€" sand schools. The Canadian Education Assoâ€" ciation estimates that there is still a shortage of about six thousand qualified teachers in â€" Canada. Out of every hundred children who begin school only fiftyâ€"three go on to high school and only one goes on to university to attain a degree. _ In the Kiwanis Music Festival, Marilyn Weisbroad of Humber Heights School came first in the piano solo for girls under sixâ€" teen. _ The ‘flu around our school has died out and teachers and pupils are returning to their jobs. _ Canadian Statistics Weston Senior Public Education is one of the most important factors in the lives of men, and it involves considerably more than the controlled process that goes on within the classroom. Fedéral statistics reveal that amazing and disturbing fact that out of every one hundred Canaâ€" dian children who start ‘school, thirtyâ€"two drop out before they have finished their elementary education. This leaves sixtyâ€"eight who reach the level of eighth grade, which is only the first mileâ€" stone on the road to an education. Only fiftyâ€"three of the sixtyâ€" eight start secondary school. Moreâ€" than half drop out and just twentyâ€" two achieve junior matriculation or equivalent standing. i The ranks are thinned even furâ€" ther during senior matriculation; only thirteen of our original one hundred complete this last step beâ€" fore university, Nine of thirteen senior matriâ€" culants go to work, one takes other training; that leaves a mere three to start university, During the years at university, two more take other employment. Of the one hundred /students who began that first day &t school, only one takes a university io[m. Bulb Time in the Classroom Some time in November, 1950, forms three, four, seven, and cight planted buibs. These were brought in from the pit about a month ago. We now have beautiâ€" ful flowers and the fragrance of the blooms permeates the entire After we received our science marks, Mr. Hampton said that the students with the highest marks and aiso the ones who had shown the most improvement might take their flowers home,. _ o I am certain that the students who earned these flowers were glad that they had worked hard in sclence periods.. o ons ue Lin Shorey, Form I Margo McDougall chool _ craphook 4 Brian Kirby By SAM WILSON Church Choir The choir practised all last week, some times at noon and other times in spare periods. On Friday afterâ€" noon at one o‘clock we went to the Baptist Church to practise. We lined up down stairs and went up to the church in order, Mr. Brum accompanied us on the new organ. On Sunday night we were to be at the Baptist Church at 6.30 p.m. to practise before the service. Mr. Allen helped us to line to go into the church. Everyone was nervous, but we soon settled down. We sang two numbers, O Lively Peace by Handel and Jerusalem by Parry. I think everyone enjoyed being a member of this choir. â€" Unsightly overhead power lines which sometimes get in the way of farm equipment and are often blown down by severe storms, can be laid underground since the reâ€" cent introduction of a new type of cable insulated with the synthetic \rubber neoprene. Electric Cables Go Underground Tests have been conducted over the last 15 years to determine the suitability . of neoprene â€" jacketed cable for underground installation. In one test the cable showed no signs of deterioration after being buried in wet ground for five years, according to Câ€"Iâ€"L Agriculâ€" tural News. Other accelerated tests showed that the neoprene jacket was unharmed by acid of alkalis in concentration found in the ground. It is believed that the cable will last at least 20 years without giving any trouble. T A XI WINDER‘S PHONE 411 ZONE 4â€"700 RADIO DISPATCHED Aundrey Totterâ€"Richard Baschart MON.
