The Welland traffic amounted to 7,439,617 tons of freight, which was an increase of 192,158 tons over the previous recâ€" ord made in. 1927, and the St. Lawâ€" rence traffic amounted to 8,411,542 tons, or an increase of 498,590 tons over the 1927 record. The freight traversing the entire length of the St. Lawrence canals amounted to 7,321,â€" 348 tons, which was an increase over the through traffic for 1927 of 458,â€" 693 tons. The way traffic, or freight using only a part of the St. Lawrence canal system, much of which used only the Lacine locks, amounted. to 1,090,194 tons. Over half of the through freight using the St. Lawâ€" rence canals was wheat, which amounted to 3,830,857 tons, or 127,â€" 695,200 bushels. The next largest items were 727,480 tons of bituminâ€" ous coal, 597,448 tons of barley, and 183.021 tons of pulpwood. The Bureau of Statistics distributed last week the Annual Report on Canal Statistics for 1928.
