C T. f’.‘:; Cï¬‚ï¬ Our Main Street There should be a special effort now put forth to have the main street of Weston made a real business cenâ€" tre.. The town officials have done their part. Our pavement, our lights, are such that they will bring business to the street. Still, no business will come of itself. The merchants must be alive to the opportunities. They must draw the people to the street. They must make the street attracâ€" tive, so that people will see something when they come down town. The difâ€" ferent associations in the different centres in the ‘city have been doing great stunts, so that they might get the people together and thus stimuâ€" late business.. What we want toâ€"day is this community spirit in our merchâ€" ants. Let all get together and bring the people to our main street. By this coâ€"operation the whole of the street will be transformed. The vaâ€" cant lots will be built upon.. The old places will be replaced by modern stores and the cash will be kept in circulation. tation commission should be willing to this line the efficiency that will make it pay. ‘The Weston line, serving as it does some $12,000 people all told, with a ten minute service and a twenâ€" ty minute rur to the city, will have more users than it now has. The betâ€" tering of this service will be the means Humber Drive and Waters It is high time that our council considered the great possibilities that the Humber waters and valley preâ€" sents to this town.. The Horticultural Society have done their bit in this great work. Our council, however, could take this over and see that the ownership is decided, and that a nice driveway and playground ‘are made along the banks of the Humber. Also efforts â€"to have our town park made still more attractive this year by the laying out of the whole grounds for athletic purposes. Some beauty spots as laid out in the plans of the Hortiâ€" cultural Society should be followed. In this matter the council can‘take a lead that will be followed by the citizens. Our Societies Have Their Work . The different societies have all a responsibility in developing this town. The different organizations can _ do much to see that their societies aro functioning. We have in this town everything that is needed in the way of organization. The great difficulty is that a number are not doing just what they set out to accomplish. This is what is needed. Every society should start the new year with a reâ€" solve to function. If it is a Y.P.A., then see that it is reaching the young people with something that will be inâ€" structive. If it is an athletic associaâ€" tion then see that it provides the neâ€" cessary recreation for the members and the town. If it is a literary soâ€" ciety, then see that men and women are given the literary advantages. If it is musical, then look after the muâ€" sical. There are many others, and if they will all function, then we can look forward to the year 1922 as the great year for‘Weston. It is by the welding of all these forces into one great active body bent upon developâ€" ing a great town that we will sucâ€" ceed. Coâ€"operation will\ develope that community spirit that is\so necessary. Let each one do his part and don‘t leave the start till December, 1922, but start now. of making it possible for more peoâ€" ple to live in Weston and alyong the Weston Road. It will bring new resiâ€" dents and industries when they know that we are connected up with the city in this way. Our council will have no easy task, but they can do it, and they will have the coâ€"operation of the whole town and neighborhood in their endeavow: * Mr. George Sainsbury, bandmaster of the Weston Boys‘ Band, takes this opportunity of expressing his thanks and appreciation to the citizens: of Weston for their most liberal, loyal and hearty support of the band, as shown by the cordial reception and generous response in aid of the fund during the Christmas week. The sum of $229.17. was collected, and this money will be used in purchasing inâ€" struments. and additional equipment, in order to give the people better serâ€" vice. First Great Duty The first great duty of the year is put forth well by the posters that the rotary club of the city have issued. This poster is well worded. It speaks not to one class or to one set of inâ€" dividuals, but it speaks to everyone. It calls upon all to put back of them all pessimistic ideas and start in to move things. The need of the hour is confidence in the new year. This confidence, will not be created by men and women sitting by holding tight what they have and not trying to proâ€" duce. ~We must have the wheels spinâ€" ning and the factories running.. We must have our financial house ready to assist all sane, well matured plans that will give labour. In short, it is a time for coâ€"operation. Don‘t sit idly by and let the weight of despondâ€" ency pull you down. Jump up with the new year and take a fresh hold. Go after the things that are worth while and make good. It takes leadâ€" ership and coâ€"operation in the ranks to bring about a better condition. The opportunity is here, it‘s up to our men, our societies, our organizations; our municipal leaders, to make the most oi them. The week of prayer is being .obâ€" served in the Methodist Church on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Tuesday. afternoon. the W.M.S. held a union meeting.. Wedâ€" nesday the Brotherhood took charge of the regular midâ€"week service and Thursday night the Young People‘s Society will be~inâ€"charge. ~All welâ€" come. Few towns in Untario have a boys‘ band that is equal to our boys‘ band. That the citizens of the town of Weston appreciate the work that has been done by these boys and by those who are behind the band, was shown in no mean manner during the Xma#S season. These boys deserve the hearty support that was given to them. Under® the »greatest difficulty and opposition the boys‘ band has been carefully carried along. Weeks of training and drudgery has been overâ€" come by good leadership and some coâ€"operation by our citizens. It was thought that the band would never amount to anything. The boys have justified their existence by. their splendid record during the summer months and, by their work during the Christmas season. ‘Ihese boys will be the better men for the training that they have received. . Wheir lives will be influenced by the music trainâ€" ing. If more training along these different lines would be given to. our boys, there would be better citizens. It is to those men who so unselfishly give up their time to the training of boys that the. country owes a lot. More attention should. be paid. to these matters in our town.. We as a town are proud of the boys‘ band and are looking forward to a good season for them during this year. Bright with new hopes and resoluâ€" tions, the new year season is here. Once more we look forward with conâ€" fidence that this year will be the year to make another advance.. This feelâ€" ing is embedded in the hearts of every man. It is therefore the great opporâ€" tunity for every society, organization and municipality to enlist these men in their plans. When men see the opportunity and feel that something is ahead, then you can secure their services. We have our councils electâ€" ed and ready to carty on. Fhese men are looked upon to take the lead. They can do it successfully if they have the coâ€"operation of all. What we need in our municipal life is this coâ€"operative spirit. Criticism of the constructive type is always welcomed. It is acted upon and is beneficial to the community. The Man, the Society, the Organâ€" ization, the Municipality that Goes After Them Wins. 1972 OPPORTUNTES MV T0X 6NSP Wed ree. Bis Problem Haces the Board fer the Ensuing Year 1922. $ In last week‘s issue there was a serious error â€" made. The:â€" Teport stated Mr. James Dennis was elected by acclamation to a place on the board. ‘This was not correct. There were four men to come before the people for sreâ€"election. They were Messrs: J. Hearn, D. Campbell, G. Moogh and D. Rowntree. These four men were returned to the board. There is to be one more appointed from the county council, which will complete the board. Mr. Dennis was not even geeking the honor. He has served on the board and was one of the best men who served during a very trying period. 0( It is expected that the county counâ€" cil appoints the member who is now retiring from the board as their repâ€" resentative for the next two years. Mr. N. Clarke has been a very effiâ€" cient member of the board and the county will do weil to retain his services. Big Problems Face the Board With the rapid growth of the town duriig the past few years and the increased number of high sehool puâ€" pils it places a burden upon this board. . The first great question o1 accommodation for the public school pupils has been solved by the Maria Street. school. For the present year or so there will be nothing required | in that direction. With the closing of the high schools in the city teo the county pupils, there has been added to the Weston school q2 new field and greater responsibilities. To meet these new conditions and give the necessary efficiency it will be necessary to provide more accommoâ€" dation. The â€"board have been workâ€" | ing during the past year to have the county bear. their share of the exâ€" pense due in large extent to the county conditicns. Our board â€"are faced with the problem of carrying on with very limited accommodation. | They are looking after the interest of ( the ratepayers, the town as an eduâ€" cational centre, and the pupils. Every coâ€"operation should be given to the‘ board in their big task. | Efficiency oï¬ Our Schools It has been often remarked that our schools are most efficient. ‘The | board secured the services of a most | efficient staff of | teachers. These | hnave been the result of much work | and careful selection. ‘The splendid, â€"results that these teachers have obâ€"% tained is shown by the work of theq pupils in their examinations.* When. a full comparison is made with theï¬ other towns and schools they show that our scholars stand very high. To maintain \;this efficiency we must have the right men on the board. Our present board have a vision Of }the needs and are meeting the deâ€" mands. Their work during the past year has returned them to work withâ€" out any change. The whole town is to be congratulated upon the selecâ€" tion of these men_ who are giving their services to our town. ’ There is a great scarcity of stores. Many enquiries are being received from business men wanting to locate. There is a good chance for some builder to make good by. building upâ€" toâ€"date stores. The year just opened bids fair to be one of great activity as regards Real Estate. The new Main Road has added greatly to the attraction ‘of the town. You have only to take a walk in and out the side streets to see that Weston is growing. / Buildings are beâ€" ing erected on most of the streets of the town. Just outside the town‘s limits many new homes anre growing up. In Etobicoke Township, Westâ€" mount, and â€" Humbermount Heights buildings are being erected. Never before has there been so many enâ€" quiries at this time of the year for vacant lots.. Mr. Seal and Mr. Bert Irwin both report more sales of vacant lots this year than in previous years, which would indicate extensive buildâ€" ing operations in the spring. Mr. 1. W. Draper has built a number of houses on Humbermount and are all sold. _ Also he is building three more now. Mr. Seal reports that Humberâ€" mount Heights is quite active, six lots being sold Christmas week. Just north of Massey Harris plant, Pellatt Park lots will be sold on attractive terms without interest. Dr. Irwin‘s property at Thistletown is practically sold out. Another large block on the Main Road will be open soon at prices to suit all. Land can be purchased on Main Street from $30 to $160 per foot. It is reported that one lot on Main St. was sold for considerably over $100 just this past week. (The opportunity this year js great for \woeston, and â€"let our slogan be: W akch . Weston Erow." Never before were perhaps business prospects so good. The new year cerâ€" tainly looks one of a great promise for Weston and surrounding districts.
