Ti? l After many weeks of striking the workers at the Brown's Brass Rolling mills will start back to work on Wed- nesday morning. This is certainly good news to the district. During a strike period there is always a, big loss to everyone. At the present time there is a direct loss to Canada. Goods that could be manufactured here are vmgu1ufactured in other places, where delivery can be made. Capital and l labor must share the ..1- dits and there 'will then be a proper adjustment. At , L. i/ielocllt time, however, it is bad to see our industries tied up, when it I means so much to our country, The services/on Sunday evening in the Tofntinson Methodist Church was a patriotic one, conducted by the Rev. G. B. King, pastor, who took as his subject â€Comradeship, in the Home, and Nation, and in the Church." He said that in many homes there was a great lack of the comrade spirit be- tween the members of the family, and urged the, need, of keepihg up family worship and the spirit ot communing with each other. In the nation there was a. great unrest among all classes and want of trustfulness in each other. In the church there was need of more of that spirit of comradeship in the working out of the community spirit tor the building up of the church and unity of action for the advancement of the Kingdom of God. Appropriate hymns were sung and a very helpful and inspiring service was enjoyed by those present.. . The members of the Junior Epworth League held an enjoyable picnic at the grounds of Mr. Arthur Parker, Church Street. About thirty members took part, under the management of Mr. S. Batstone and Mrs. Austin. Several applications for permits to build are in the hands of the town's building inspector, varying in value trom one to eight thousand dollars. Mimico is undoubtedly the coming residential district, _ The -members of the Earlscourt S. A. corp band visited Mimico on Sun- day and took charge of the day's ser- vices, which were well attended.' The Earlscourt Band is an excellent one and the music :t1rrnished ,gave great pleasure'to a good many people out- sidexvthe hall, as well as to those in- side. Repairs are being made to the road through the village. It might be here noted that there is only one Way to spend money on roads. ‘Build them right and keep up the repairs on them. This will be the cheapest way to the municipality in the end. Mr. J. II. Walker, a former resident ot Mimico, is on a visit to friends here this week. Several sales of vacant lands and residential properties ' have recently been successfully negotiated by Mr. Royce and Mr. Goramly, the local real estate dealers. These gentlemen express very Optimistic views of the future of Mimico as a really first class residential district and point to the splendid residences that have been erected here this year." Mrs. J. J. Harrison is spending a vacation at Thurstonia. Park, near Lindsay. Mr. George Duffield of England was the speaker on Sunday last at the meeting of the Junior Epworth League. Mr. Duffield gave an excep- tionally interesting address and at the conclusion presented each member present with a Christian calendar. July lst, Dominion Day, was cele- brated inMimico by a general holiday A beautiful day made the numerous picnic parties very enjoyable affairs, many returned soldiers being enter- tained in this way. q At a meeting held on Monday of the Joint Sewerage Commission attended by Mayor West, Reeve Coulton, Dep. Reeve Bryer of Mimico, Reeve Love- joy and Councillor Shackleton of New Toronto, several important matters were taken up, chief of which was the question of the new machinery for the disposal plant, machinery which was to come from England, but owing to the war had not been delivered. The way is now clear and the machinery will be got in the near future. The vacancy at the pumping station was filled by the appointing of Mr. Wm. Pettit, a returned soldier, to the posi- tion. A communication from Miss Hunter of Salisbury Avenue was read, in which complaint was made that the sewerage was leaking .into a well on her premises. Engineer Lewes was instructed to investigate. Miss E. Batstone, Miss Irene Elana, Miss Florence Elana, Mr. Stanley Bat.. stone and Mr. Herbert Eland are spending a, week at Elgin House, Lake Joseph, Muskoka. Another Accident On Tuesday while attempting to cross the highway opposite to her home on the Lake Shore Road, Mrs. J. Coulton was hit, by a motorcycle and her limbs badly hurt. This accident was caused by the long string of cars held up at the Mimico Creek bridge. It is nearly time that the matter was investigated and'the blame for these hold-ups laid at the right door. The people of Mimico are often held up and it is almost impossible to cross the road on account of these hold-ups. While it is known that the contractors have had some very difficult and un- forseen problems to contend with, still they have not had everything running at full. speed. These hold-ups could be avoided easily if the commission would only act. The old bridge is wide enough to let two cars pass. The whole trouble lies in the tact that the mouth of the temporary bridge has net been built wide enough. If there was added another two feet at the entrance, two cars could pass along and thus the hold-ups would be stopped. 353- 2, NEW TORONTO SUNNY LEA 2nd promptly done , "': Times ‘& Guide Job Work MIMICO The Sunday schools of Asbury and Elia, held their annual picnic in Pratt's flats on Saturday afternoon, June 28th. Games were played and everybody enjoyed the swings, which were put up. A booth in which candy, ice cream and bananas were sold, was well patronized and realized several dollars. Refreshments were provided by the ladies. Early in the evening the party broke up, everybody pleased with the pleasant outing. " We have been pleased to welcome back home three of our boys from France, during the past two weeks. The first to arrive was Ivan Snider, who had been overseas three years. William McKie and Alf. Giles have a1- so returned and have been on active service for almost two years. A number of Elia. young people went over to Thistletown on Saturday evening, June 28th, to enjoy the splen- did concert and strawberry festival given by the ladies of the Thistletown Methodist Church. The Elia Community Club spent a very enjoyable evening at the home ot Miss Eleanor Buchanan on Friday, June 20th. For a while outdoor games were played, then everybody went in- side. The roll was called and respond- ed to by a short poem from a, Cana- dian author. A mock court followed. This was very Interesting and amus- ing besides, being educative. A great deal of fun was' caused by a peanut contest. Partners were chosen and each person given a knife. The game was toAee who could carry the most peanuts on his knife and deposit them in‘a hat at the opposite side of the room. The time, given tor each oou- pie was two minutes. Miss Ella Jack- son and Mr. Harold Stevenson were the winners. Dainty refreshments were served. by the hostess and after the usual manner, "‘Auld Lang Syne" was sung. The meeting adjourned to meet in the school house in two week's time. s That same evening other young peo- ple from Elia journeyed up to Concord to a, similar festival. Although no concert was given the, festival was well worth while. Mrs. Pearson of her dauggter, Mrs, Elia. A Soldier Lecturer. Sergt. Jas. A. Snider, C. E. F., in a recent letter to his parents in Elia from Belfast, Ireland, where he is now enjoying a. holiday, describes a. visit- to Scotland and other parts of the British Isles, which he was privileged to make. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Snider assisted the Maple Presbyterian choir at the Eversley anniversary services on Sunday, June 22nd. He stated that during his term overseas he lectured on agriculture in the Khaki College in England and was promoted to the non-commission- ed‘ranks during the war, Sergt. Snider is past president of the Junior Farmers' 'tksrsociation of York County, and secretary-treasurer top the Junior Farmers' Association of the Province of Ontario. The annual strawberry festival held on Saturday night last under the aus- pices of the Methodist Sunday school was as usual a great success. A social hour was enjoyed during the early part of the evening, and later on the splendid programme provided was ap- preciated by all. On the holiday the Goodyear Bowl- ing Club grounds at Mimico was the scene of great life and activity. The good weather, greens, a large number of rinks, and a. big gallery all made the opening tournament of this club a. big success. Many surprises were given on the play of the day. Full list of winners will be given next week, Young Farmers' Picnic TEE: Young Farmers of York Coun- ty held their annual picnic recently at Jackson's Poi'nt. A good program of games and sports was carried out, and despite the unfavorable weather conditions an enjoyable time was spent. Another home was made sad on the holiday. While boating at the mouth ot the Humber on the holiday after- noon, Stewart Smith of Dovercourt Road, Toronto, fell from' his boat and was drowned. After a short search the body was recovered. t The Mimico team was badly beaten on Tuesday, when they played the Woodbridge team at Woodbridge. For some reason our boys were all out of form, and the opposing team cleaned up 11-2. This is the first game of the. season that Mimico has lost, and the fans hope that such a failure will not be repeated. DR. P. J. WATSON, Dentist, office at Connaught Hall, Super- ior Avenue, Mimico.
