In the low cost public housing elderly persons with a self sufficient income and in good health are proâ€" vided with bachelor and one bedroom apartment units on landscaped subâ€" urban sites. At least 12 of these projects are now in operation and construction is in progress on ‘four others. More than 1,800 apartment suites are being proviged in this fashion with another 1,642 ‘under construction or soon to be in the building stage. Another new home for the a will be under construction this on Sherbourne St. in the city. other suburban site has been bou with construction expected to be in 1965. accommodation for 2,262 elderly citizens. Two of the homes are located in the city, one in Etobicoke (Kipling Acres with 390 beds and a new wing and auditorium completed last year), one in Scarboro, and another on the outskirts of Newmarket on the verge of the Metro planning area. Today the Metro administration can mark as one of its greatest achievements the provision of housâ€" ing for the elderiv. Metro now has ed a front in North America among administrations in providing ho accommodation for the elderly. Back in 1953 . . . 11 years ag only public home for the aged Lambert Lodge, once a factory later a hospital for war veteran From almost not from a converted fa Metro government front in North Am« administrations in 1 accommodation for Controller John Carroll mentioned in a Board of Control meeting that votes would be lost in the Kingsway and Cloverdale areas over the Sherâ€" way Shopping Centre. But, rightly or wrongly he sincerely feels he is doing the right thing for the Townâ€" ship by helping to put it through. Rarely does a Committee, Board of Controt or Council meeting pass without someone mentioning that votes have been lost in one area or gained in another. Municipal elections are only five months away, and no one is more aware of the fact than the elected officials of this township. _ ke An Inside Look At Metro mes cost public housing for is somewhat different es for the aged where W be Af i da Gallant Ed it o rial B ved the portra building n cor ep Mr. McBane was truly a deâ€" ted family man. As might be expected in Metro‘s homes for the aged the women outnumber the men by almost a 2â€"1 ratio. At least four of the Metro home for the aged residents are each over 100 yvears of age. Another important Metro governâ€" ment task is to provide hospital care for indigent citizens . . . people who are poor. Last year, for example Metro picked up a £716,092 hospital bill for the treatment of 8.236 patients in general public hospitals. Each of these patients were found unable to pay their hospital bill Etobicoke‘s share of the indigent hospital bill last year was over $9,400, This is a year when people are beâ€" ginning to do more than grumble about their taxes. So far this year Metro expects 10,000 property ownâ€" ers to appeal against their property assessment for taxation in 1965. Many people of course are discouragâ€" ed by the legal process that is necesâ€" sary and the need to appear before a court of revision. At the same time the city and suburbs are rebating about $850,000 this year in taxes collected on proâ€" perty under the vacaney allowance clause in the assessment act. This is where if a landlord has vacant premises for a three month period he can obtain a tax rebate. Metro government has 650 typeâ€" writers for its office staff. A two vear typewriter cleaning contract will cost Metro a monthly inspection rate of $1.56 for each machine. Of course this includes the supply of a new typewriter ribbon after each inâ€" spection. M (On the other hand the electorate have a similar responsibility. For example, will the residents on Chaunâ€" cey Avenue look only to the inaction taken with their particular problem when marking their ballot? It must be hoped for that all the other officials will act in a similar manner â€" affirming tne measures they believe to be of benefit and opâ€" posing those they feel will be detriâ€" mental. If preâ€"election jitters set in, much harm can be done in trying to catch votes by popular but unwise actions. agg TV «.
