McKenzie, principal of Martingrove Garâ€" dens Public School. Mr. McKenâ€" zie explained that Arithmetic is the science of numbers up to Grade 6, then it becomes one of many sciences ie. Algebra, Geâ€" ametry, etc. Number work starts in Kindergarten with songs and games, and progresses on up through the grades. Earlier methâ€" ods of teaching Arithmetic placâ€" ed great emphasis on rules and drills. There is still a place for rules and drills but in propor; tion to meanings and discoverâ€" ies Several examples of teaching aids that are used to help the junior grades understand the number facts, were shown. The main reason for introducing new methods into Arithmetic is to get the pupils to enjoy what they are doing. There is a great need for more mathematicians in modâ€" ern society.
