Retirement Both Title & Intent Of Drama Guild Anyone with a spare dollar to spend could do no better than to invest it in evening at the Etobicoke couam. Montgomâ€" ery Rd., next Thursday or Friâ€" day, April 16 and 17. Etobicoke Drama Gulld memâ€" ber, Mrs. Margaret Burrell of 40 Steven Harris Dr. explains why: Estuary House â€"â€" an old preâ€" Tudor farmhouse is situated beâ€" low the town of Gravesend in the Thames marshes, This is the mun, tor the Etobicoke Drama Guild‘s final production for the 1963â€"64 Season, "Ladies in Reâ€" tirement." The house belonged, in the | year 1888, to a Miss Leonara| Fiske. Miss Fiske, as you will! realize when you see her, is an| uncommon type â€" shrewd of| wit and quick of temper, She is a retired lady of easy virtue, who still emulates the airs and graces of youth. In the past, she has had good friends â€" one or| two of whom still pay her small quarterly allowances â€" and she| has saved some money. In this‘ role, we have Edna Hewton, | who is no stranger to Etobicoke! audiences, both in plays and as| a solo performer. Miss Fiske has chosen to spend the last years of her life in reâ€" tirement, with her friend and housekeeper â€" companion Ellen Creed. Ellen is a very dignitied and striking woman â€" the perâ€" fect housekeeper, or was she? June Roe is appearing in this role and is a new member of St. Thomas More Players (reâ€" cent winners of the Western Onâ€" tario Drama League Festival) and the London Little Theatre. While living in London, she also appeared on a CFPLâ€"TV play entitled, "South East Pasture." She will no doubt prove to be a decided asset to our local Etoâ€" bicoke group. the Guild. She is not, however, new to the stage, having workâ€" ed for four years with both the Her assistant with the houseâ€" hold «chores is a pretty young miss named Lucy Gilham, deâ€" lightfully portrayed by J udy Darragh, who has been a memâ€" ber of the Guild for some years now, although this is her first play this season. . Poor Lucy, she does her best (or at least tries to) but can-‘ not resist the flirtatious adâ€" vances of Ellen Creed‘s amorâ€"; ous nephew, Albert Feath@r. Alâ€" bert is a thoroughly impudent type â€" and consequently a great favorite with the ladies, Regretâ€" ably, he is also a thief! As the play unfolds, we even find Alâ€" bert playing "private detective" â€"with a view to lining his own pockets with sovereigns as a result of his findings. This role is in the capable hands of Alan Whiteley, w ho has played a variety of roles for the Guild, as well as running the drama workshop. Two of the most delightful character parts which should not be missed, are that of Louisa and Emily Creed, twin sisters of Ellen, as portrayed by Joan Parris and Doris Petrie. Louisa is a thinâ€"faced, shaâ€" dowy personality, simple rather as a child, fluttering and fretful and at times, decidedly comical. Joan Parris is perfectly cast in this role and uses all her years of experience as an actress to really become Louis®, trusting and dependent on her sister Elien. In complete contrast is Doris Petric‘s interpretation of Emily Creed. She gives a gypsy air to the partâ€"sullen and resentful and hating her dependence on Ellen. At times she is almost sinister, particularly when she learns that Ellen has tricked her. Although fairly new to the stage in the last two years, Doris is perfectly at home on it! Making her first appearance in a Jâ€"act play, is the Guild‘s secretiry,> Pamela Hackett, as Sister Theresa â€" a friend of Miss Fiske from the nearby priory. Pam has been responâ€" sible for a great deal of "behind the scenes" work in connection with the productions of the last 2 years. It will be nice to see her in front of the footlights this time! The play is being directed by Lawrence Elion. He is a vetâ€" éran of the theatre, having been associated with it in one form or another, for the last 30 years. He worked with ENSA enterâ€" taining the troops during the last war â€" he is a firstâ€"rate comic! His activities since comâ€" ing to Canada, however, have been mainly in the field of diâ€" rection, though he still acts when a suitable part crops up. He was president of the Weston Little Theatre for many years, until he went out to Vancouver, where he worked with the West Vancouver Little Theatre Group. Upon his return to Toronto last year he joined the Etobicoke Guild and has appeared in their last two plays. This play, in dolilhu'ux authentic costumes of the peri is a good mixture of comedy and suspense and worthy of a large audience. ‘Adding spice to the evening out, will be a dsplay of work done b‘l& pecént months by the Eto e Art Group. This will be in the foyer for your perusal during intermissions, qCcesc use ht rous youus coutor‘ _act ror fNE* \»\"E“:/ â€"â€" s 6 at ws sasy ° Budge! ~ C\ dc #TCANADIAN TIRE ASSOCIATE STORE EREE ‘cfifld.“'“ A€tend) ; Tire 975 The QUEENSWAY CORNER OF ISLINGTON AVE.
