This somewhat startling deâ€" elaration came from Peter Gzowâ€" ski, managing editor of Macâ€" Lean‘s Magazine, during an adâ€" dress he gave at a Hart House Library Evening. Placing the blameâ€"firmly with the universities, the former Varâ€" sity editor criticized the entire system of teaching literatureâ€" to undergraduates. "Letters to the editor of the Spectator in England are as good as the best articles in MacLean‘s and better than editorials in the Globe and Mail." "But he doesn‘t realize that the whole point of literature is comâ€" munication." Mr. Gzowski said _ students should be encouraged to read more contemporary literature inâ€" stead of being bogged down by Hawthorne, James and Fielding. "A better thing to do," he said, "would be to assign him a year in which he would read books written no earlier than 1950." "A lecturer tells the student that a certain book is great," he said, "and then the student goes to the library, reads a few critiâ€" cisms and finds out why the book is great. He also lamented the fact that more writers weren‘t connected with the university: "I don‘t see why the university here doesn‘t bring back Mordicai Richler from England." â€" Recalling his own experiences, Mr. Gzowski said much of the cooy handed in to magazines in Canada is illiterate and that he was desperately looking for good writers because "there simply are not enough around". A New Look ... ... At Education Universities, he claimed. were stultifying any natural talent writers might have: "Everything I learned about writing I learned after university." I‘ve got news for Mr. Gzowski, everything I learned about writâ€" ing I learned without going to university. But I believe I learned it in much the same way: by reading Mr. and Mrs. John Addison, Stock Ave., are eagerly awaiting their daughter Judy‘s return on February 15, from Europe, where she has been on tour since last August. Kindest wishes for an early and covery. Congratulations to Mrs. Mary Legg, Riverwood Parkway, on her winning a Philco Portable Television set in the Nestle comâ€" petition last week. Judy taught school for three vears in South Peel, and will resume studies at Toronto Uniâ€" versity in the fall. Of course, all this and more I got secondâ€"hand. Had I been there I‘d have asked Mr. Gzowâ€" ski if he had any magic formula for writing success other than that which has long since been acknowledged by lecturers of all degrees as s olarship. That is why I cannot underâ€" stand Mr. Gzowski‘s remarks on university.. research: "True reâ€" search only begins at the liâ€" brary", he said, "but at univerâ€" sity research ends at the library." No. I do not mean the kind one â€"caches by obtaining top marks for a set examination. Nor the kind which some freshly graduated | university . students believe they have but which no university can supply in two or even three years of study. There is no shortcut that I can see: no quick way to developâ€" ment of a wellâ€"siocked mind, disâ€" ciplined intelligence, and disâ€" criminating taste. I rather suspect, Mr. Gzowski is asking too much of the uniâ€" versities. The habit of good writing like the habit of ethical conduct, is of slow growth; it is an aspect of a person‘s general intellectual development and I do not see how it can be greatly hastened apart from that development. The universities &&h only preve pare the way. I do, however, agree with Mr. Gzowski that| more time could be apent on conâ€" | temporary though&f only to‘ gauge what influence‘traditional| literature has had upon it. My : guess is that if it‘s good then it‘s ‘ been considerable. | day, February 15, 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Those who would like to square dance, but feel they are not proficient enough to attend a more advanced club will feel right at }}ome with the Swinging Eights.
