The February meeting of the Maple Leaf Home & School was well attended when the speakâ€" er‘s subject was "Recent Trends of Art Education in Elementary Schools." x Mr. Fred Shaw, Superrsor of Arts and Crafts for Elermentary Schools in North York emphaâ€" sized that art in the public schools is not an unnecessary frill, but plays a definite roll in the development of our chilâ€" dren. If a child is allowed to exâ€" press his own impressions freeâ€" ly at the drawing board or other art media, unnindered by any adult‘s preconceived notion of how an object looks, valuable lessons are learned. You help your child by accepâ€" ting his work .at his level and most important by displaying his work at home. Mr. Shaw stated that each child is unique, a fact we all know, but sometimes forget, and that art gives him a chance to express his personal reaction to experience. During the evening, a group of children from various grades worked industriously at paper sculpture, _ asbestos . modelling and painting, clearly demonstraâ€" ting many points brought out by Mr. Shaw. Slides were also shown, showing the advanceâ€" ment in the children‘s expresâ€" sion from the Kindergarten through six grades. Even a sixâ€"year old searches for truth and exprosses what he sees in his art work.
