Sports action from ©‘69 It was the year the amazing New York Mets came out of oblivion to win the World Series. It was the year the Jets of the AFL surprised the experts by knocking off Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl. All the action from these exciting moments in sport, from Forrzula 1 car racing to slalom skiing, will be featured on Sports ‘69, Saturday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. EST, on CBCâ€"TV. The program contains more than 100 thrilling items garnered from an immense sports film library, and highlights almost every major sports activity of the last 12 months. It will be hosted by Bob Moir, with further _ commentary provided by Don Chevrier and Tom McKee. It was 1969 â€" and a year of surprising upsets, staggering new records and banner headlines in the world of sports. Some of the eventful moments recalled include the emergence of the Montreal Expos on the big league baseball scene, the near scandal surrounding "Broadway‘‘ Joe Namath‘s shortâ€"lived retirement, the U.S. baseball strike, O.J. Simpson‘s signing with Buffalo Bills, and Canada‘s first national summer games in Halifax. It was also the year the champions proved they deserved to remain on top. The Montreal Canadiens took home the Stanley Cup. Ottawa â€" Rough _ Riders defeated the "Jolly Green Giants‘"‘ from Saskatchewan in the Grey Cup, Ron Norâ€" thcott of Calgary won the World Curling Championship for the second year in a row, and the Russian National Hockey Team again showed that hockey isn‘t necessarily a Canadian game (in inâ€" ternational amateur comâ€" petition at any rate). All the tense moments of triumph and defeat have been gathered together on film and videotape in a CBC sports television special entitled Sports ‘69, to be broadcast in color on the CBC network Saturday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. EST. NORTH YORK HOCKEY Once again, due to an early deadline, few reports are available, but North West still seem to be enjoying a good season. In tyke play Ernie Neely‘s team came through with a 1â€" 0 win over Humberview Boys Club with Steve Mittens and Larry Catania getting the shut out. Minor Bantams shut out Flemingdon Park on a combined effort by goalies Mark Haladyn and Mark Zaremba. This game was not one of the campaign, as Flemingdon, being a new club are building from the ground up, and consequently are suffering very heavy defeats. They allowed us a high scoring evening with Paul Guiliani, Romano Carlucci and Bryan Cleaver netting three each, Peter Crouse was good for two, and Bobby Richardson singled, Finchurst Whites went down 3â€"1 to Hawkin‘s men, the shut PAGE 12 out being spoiled by a dubiously awarded penalty shot. â€" Romano Carlucei opened for us and Danny McBrien made it safe with two sparkling goals. Minor Midgets settled for single points this week, tying Avenue Road B.C. 2â€"2 thanks to Paul Knight having a big evening. Paul Barron gave us the break, matching a goal by Finchurst. All goals were scored when the opposition was shortâ€"handed. Bruce once again showed his scoring touch but in a losing cause, when Dorset Park beat them 2â€"1. A heavy schedule over the holidays will give this team a busy time, but we wish them and all their Club mates, away down to Tykes a successful and happy Yuletide. MINOR HOCKEY LEAGUE All Minor Hockey League players wish all their coaches, managers trainers and referee‘s and time keepers, A Very Merry Christmas.
