iX History of Thanksgiving Hallowe‘en October begins with Thanksgiving and ends with Hallowe‘en. Both feature, as a symbol of the occasion, the pumpkin. In one it is set in the midst of other fruits, vegetables and grain to highlight the abundance of the harvest. In the other the pumpkin is made into a face to become .a part of the festival in which ghosts and witches and other strange creatures move about the Hallowe‘en is "All Saints Day" or humorously called "Feast of St. Pumpkin." The origin of All Saints Day goes back to the early seventh century when the saints and martyrs of the church were first venerated. Since the Middle Ages pagan customs and beliefs about ‘evil spirits and the souls of ‘the dead have attached themselves to the festival. "The Vigil of Hallowmass," 2s it was once named, may have been taken up by the church to supplant the Druid festival for the dead. Ghosts, witches, black cats, pranks, "trick or treat" and masquerades have been part of Hallowe‘en folklore from early times. r;n:mm g o o t t t t o t 8 i U IMPROYVE YOUR ABILITY TO THINK, REASON AND DISCUSS LOGICALLY The School of Economic Science for the 15th year in Ontario is offering its stimuâ€" lating, LOW COST Course in Basic Economics and Social Philosophy.
