A We will attempt to take you through the process of the production of this paper from the time the news staff and our advertising department have completed their part of the procedure. Composing Room The composing room is where the first physical step is taken towards transforming the reading matter or "copy" into the "printed word." The large or display type is set by what is called a "headliner." _ 8 The reading matter or "body" type is produced in column measure for reproduction purposes on a computerized typesetter. Mayor Jack Mould told council that it is already on the books to start this route in 1972 when construction on Jane St. and Eglinton, and the cloverleaf at Dundas and Jane is complete. Jane will be closed at Eglinton in March 1969 to allow completion of Eglinton Ave. westward through the Eglinton flats to hook up with the Richview Expressway over the Humber River. During the month of September, the Sunday night meetings at the Jane St. branch of the Salvation Army are being led by Lieut.-Colone1 and Mrs. Herbert Wood. Platemokins The glossy reproduction proofs as prepared by the composint room are combined with artwork and photographs in a ready-for-camera "paste-up." The paste-up may consist of one flat or may be supplemented by a series of transparent overlays depending on the number of colors or tones to be printed. The camera reproduces the paste-up and artwork photographically into "line" negatives and the pictures or wash drawings into "halftone" negatives. During this operatign, any part of the copy may be reduced or enlarged in size. Color pictures or paintings to be printed in full color must be separated into four halftone negatives. The line and halftone negatives have to be combined or "stripped'" together into a single unit or master "flat." Ready for Printing Following the opaquing of the master flat, it is then ready to be photo-chemically transferred to the aluminum printing plate. This transfer of the image is accomplished by placing the negative flat over the light sensitive plate in a vacuum printing frame. . Light from the carbon arc lights passes through the transparent parts (that which is to be printed) of the negative and hardens the printing image (albumen) on the plate. After a series of chemical washes, the plate is ready for the Dress. Offset Press Room Once thy plate is placed on the press, the basic principle of lithography is employed-"water and grease do not mix." By means of large rollers, the plate is alternately washed with water and a greasy ink. The greasy albumen on the plate (printing image) rejects the water but accepts the greasy ink. The printing image which is now "inked" is transferred to a rubber blanket which, in turn, transfers it to the paeper. Because the printing image is "offset" from the rubber blanket, this printing process is generally lithography. Offset lithography is a relatively modern printing process but has gained prominence because of 'its versatility in the, reproduction of pictures and artwork as well as type. With speed and accuracy, the offset process is used to produce single or multicolor work. The end result of all these phases, we have told you about is the finished, product you are now reading. We hope you like it. ' tr (rr, as offset
