We decided to see more of Ontario this year and planned a trip that touched at North Bay, Timmins, Foleyet, Chapleau, Wawa, Manitoulin Island, Copper Cliff, French River and back home. The provincial |parks at Arrowhead Park, \Huntsville and Ivanhoe near ‘Foleyet are fairly new and certainly worth a visit. At Ivanhoe we were able to read the paper by daylight at 10:30 at night. A six ‘day stay at Providence Bay on Manitoulin Island restored one‘s soul. We drove up the steep hill at Copper Cliff to see the big nickel and other coins as well as take a trip through a mine. The French River provided a delicious pickerel supper one night and enough for a later feed at home. Another two weeks spent on West Lake near Picton took care of our holiday for this year. Around Lake Superior is in the planning stage and eventually we may see most of this province before we start on another. 241.5686 for the coming tih tie Lsb *A On Saturday August 31 at 6:00 p.m. Miss Pat Lukonich, daughter of Peter Lukonich and the late Mrs. Lukonich, of Ahmeek, Michigan became the bride of Bob Wilson, Pat Lukonich weds son of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Wilson, Strathburn â€" Blyd. Metro works committee also has recommended that Metro take out a membership in the association. One of the problems currently being studied by the U.S. association is sanitary land fill operations, With the waterfront and other landfill projects under way or planned, Metro has a vital interest in any method that will improve, landfill operations and reduce public opposition. Metx{) intends to make some emergency repairs to the Old Weston Road bridge over the CPR rail line, Metrp roads and trafffic commissioner told Metro executive committee on Tuesday that $30,000 worth of repair work must be undertaken immediately if the bridge is to remain open through the coming winter months. Another $30,000 worth of repair work is scheduled for 1969 The immediate emergency repairs will centre on the bridge decking and columns. The bridge is an old structure with the main span being built in 1911. Metro roads and traffic department examined the bridge recently and found that severe deterioration had taken place in several areas. While complete reconstruction may be the eventual outcome for the bridge this is being postponed by Metro pending a final decision on the southerly extension of Highway 400 through York and the city. Metro will take back a watermain it handed over to York in 1965. This is because under the Metro Act water supplied to the area municipalities from Metro water plants must come through Metro watermains. In 1954 Metro took over the watermain from York but gave it back in January 1965 when no further need for the watermain existed. The city plans to build a watermain that will parallel the Spadina expressway route and wants to connect with the York watermain located on Eglinton Ave., Metro cannot have several local jurisdictions interâ€"connecting their watermains. The solution is the takeover of the York watermain. + METRO TTC Chairman Ralph Day Nas WaIncd iNdal NC NUAE transit fare increase, possibly early in 1969, must be made without warning to the public. He explained to a Metro committee last week that to give warning could result in transit riders hoarding subway tokens. While the color of the tokens may change the size does not because a precise size is required to fit into the automatic turnstiles. The only time a transit fare increase should be discussed in public, said the TTC chairman, is if Metro is prepgring to offer tax dollars to prevent a fare increase. York Controller Wes Boddington told Metro transportation committee that Metro is going to get nowhere in trying to get more money out of the federal government to help pay for railway overpasses on streets. Metro Roads and Traffic Commissioner Samuel Cass has been trying to obtain extra funds from the federal government to help pay for a railway overpass on Rogers N87 P Aous e cog n s OSE Can£ 6\1'\-l.llllllva.v mStp PCV mgs P i Rd. in York. The policy of the federal government, set more than 15 years ago, is to pay 80 per cent of the cost of a railway overpass or $500,000. The cost of construction has gone up to such an extent that the government formula for payment limits the contribution to about 30 per cent. The committee wants a conference with Transport Minister Paul Hellyer to discuss the need for extra money to help pay for the future Rogers Rd. overpass. York Controllert Wes Boddington last week turned down a trip to Miami Beach, Florida. The offer came at a Metro transportation committee meeting. North York Controller Gordon â€" Hurlburt, committee chairman, proposed that one city and one suburban civic leader attend the October conference of the American Public Works Association. It was discovered that Metro works committee also intended to send a delegate from the suburbs to the Florida convention. The question was raised as to whether Metro might be sending too many people to one conference. A large delegation of North York residents will appear at a Metro transportation committee session scheduled for Sept. 16 at which time the extension of Avenue Rd. north from Highway 401 to Sheppard Ave. will be considered. Metro traffic and roads commissioner Sam Cass said the idea of the extension is to have Avenue Rd. available to take a lot of traffic from Yonge St. during the heavy construction work on the Yonge subway line. Metro Transportation Committee is waiting for a report from Metro planning board on the southerly extension of Highway 400 through York and into the city. The concern of a number of industries and individuals in York over the proposed westerly route for the extension near the CPR main Weston line is being studied by the Metro planners. The Metro planners and the Ontario Department of Highways are both involved in charting the route for the Highway 400 extension. WESTON TRAVEL SERVICE 1912 Weston Rd. â€" (In The Westlaw Bldg.)
