Meanwhile, attending Alderwood Collegiate, he go( a taste of football and took to it like a duck takes to water. Last year, in his senior year, he was selected as the all star quarterback in Metro and surrounding district high school competition. In order to achieve this honor he had to beat out the pivot maen of 96 high schools which took part in active play and who had votes. He was a heavy favorite with most schools. Despite all the rewards heaped on him from a football standpoint, Dennis Del Torre is willing to turn his back on the game in favor of an event which has brought him his most outstanding successes, javelin throwing. There is no professional future in this but amateur wise he hopes to be the greatest, an Olympic champion. On his record, Dennis has a good chance. He is the Ontario High School senior champion with a throw of 204 feet. Heis also the Ontario junior and senior champion at the same specialty but the title he is most proud of is the Canadian junior championship which he earned last year with a throw of 216 feet. Last year a three country centennial track and field show was.staged in Ottawa involving Canada, England and France. Of ‘all the javelin competitors, he finished third in the overall standings. w _â€"â€"______ As he stated just prior to being presented with his Faustina Trophy; "I am not too fussy about a football scholarship. I have a gimpy knee and would just as soon concentrate on javelin.". Little did he realize fourteen years ago that he would be in this position. His active summer sport was lacrosse with the Alderwood Minor Lacrosse League and gradually moved up through the ranks into junior, with the Alderâ€" wood Terriers and was with some of those good Alderwood junior clubs who threatened to win everything but let the title slip away at the last minute. This possibly motivated his decision to concentrate on his specialty and should some U.S. college accept him for a scholarship on the basis of his specialty, he could be Canada‘s real hope for a gold medal in 1972 as he will be able to concentrate on improving his distance in his throws with the assistance of some professional help such as the university athletic deâ€" partments south of the borâ€" der. provide. Regardless of w here Dennis Del Torre goes in sport and what medals he wins, we will still rememâ€" ber him as the tousled hair kid who used to play minor hockey for Faustina in the winter time and who was an expert at potting goals in the Alderwood Minor Laâ€" crosse League. We can speak for all sports fans in Etobicoke by simply saying; "Good luck Dennis, w herever your footsteps lead you." This is to the credit of the 20 year old Alderwood youth. Many in such a position would try to hide the fact of bothersome injury if a college education was in the balance but no so Del Torre. w?‘ @3 â€" He remarked: "Several :iyei“tzin:hir}:‘::e?‘i:?day would ;?«“ umv;arsnt}.]].es havde Offi;led me A Weston victory on Tuesday “ scholars ips an a)t e moâ€" would cause a seventh game to } @5 2o llll ment Buffalo looks the mOSt _ pe played Friday night at Cenâ€" ¢ attractive. . . tral. WHO IS DENNIS DEL TORRE? A few weeks ago Dennis Del Torre was picked as the Lakeshore Athlete Of The Year and was awarded the Faustina Trophy as the prize for being selected to this charmed circle. Ninetyâ€"eight high schools in Toronto know him as the player picked as the all star quarterback in high school football. Up until recently, lacrosse folks knew him as a better than average lacrosse player. Athletes throughout Canada know him as an Olympic prospect in 1972 in the javelin events. Play Who, When, Where? A Weston victory on Tuesday would cause a seventh game to be played Friday night at Cenâ€" tral. A tie would also. produce the same result. Winner of this Here is, how it shaped up. After tying their first two games with Weston, Indians proceeded to drop the next match 3â€"2 last week. Then with their backs against the wall the club began to show some of the potential that we all knew was there and they handled Weston 5â€"2 in the fourth game. Back at Central Arena Sunday afternoon, Indians played the best game for a long time as they built up a 2â€"0 ‘lead then coasted to a 5â€"1 win to take a 6â€"4 lead in points. That meant a win by them on Tuesday would give them the series. 1963 Austin Mini. Lic. 531897. 1964 Volkswagen. Lic. 572204. 1966 Sunbeam Alpine. Radio. Lic. 579692. 1966 MGB. "GT". Wide wheels. Should Buzzers come back to win that series in Tuesday‘s game, and Indians eliminate Weston, the two teams would likely play Friday night in St. Michaels Arena. On the other hand if Rangers come out of that series and Etobicoke wins Tuesday, these two clubs would probably play Friday at Cenâ€" tral. Their Pride Was Hurt Their pride apparently hurt by our story of last week, Indians went on the warpath to show what they could do. And they found to their surprise that they could do pretty good. John Jacob and Fred Thwaites staked Indians to an early 2â€"0 lead in Sunday‘s game and there was never any doubt as to the outcome from that point. John Sostakas, Doug Stewart and Don Thompson scored later. Opposition Immobilized . Doug Stewart and Don Thompâ€" son led the club to the 5â€"2 win at Weston on Friday by scoring two goals each. For Thompson it was his best game of the series. He had been off form up to that. Pickin‘ Chicken ......uuuulls 3 Faustina o + Playing with determination, the Chickenmen looked like a gang of super stars as they handed Faustina its second drubâ€" bing in a row, Gord Blake was the star of the game with a real top notch effort every time he was on the ice. Ken Hunter in the chicken net also played a superlative game, but it was as a team that the Pickin‘ Chicken crew really shone. Dave McTaggart in the Fausâ€" tina net played well but he was goal in the first period but from there Westqn were immobilized by some ;ntty heavy body checks doled out in ‘o\od measâ€" ure by Indians. Al Demchuk scored Indians opening goal in the 5â€"2 win with a hard shot from directly in front of the net. After Etobicoke made it 4â€"0 in the third period, Dodgers finally got a goal by Rick Johnston and soon had two as Dennis Milroy and Dusty Papke found the range. j Stewart‘s second ‘-flll of the game and period put the verdict out of contention. Their Hands Full Assuming that Indians dispose of Dodgers on Tuesday, it will be safe to say that Indians will have their hands full in the next round against either St, Mikes or Rangers. Unless, they play the way they did in Sunday‘s game. The secret to Indians success there and in future games will be their ability to hang out stiff body checks, legally of course. This was a well played, even game that was decided by the breaks. The breaks in this case fell to Bob Stewart and Lorne Bury of Murray‘s as they were in the right place at the right time to score two good goals.
