The Ontaric Allâ€"Star Swimming Games swimmer from the Toronto University A.C., Jim Shaw, lowered Gaye Stratten‘s 200 yard backstroke time from 2:04.1 to 2:02.4. records as they trounced that â€" ince us.zm,.’.&m-fl'u to 59. In The Swim By ALAN WAITES Etobicoke Aquatie Club (EMAC) champions set seven of these to capture a major share of the spoils. Lance Peto, Doug, Keir (2), Jane Wright,. Nancy ‘Thomson, Denise Fizgerald and Kathi the new marks. One Canadian standard was esâ€" tablished . when British Empire The Quebec téam simply couldn‘t cope with Ontario‘s power and depth and they could only win 3 of 32 events, one of those wir®mcoming off a disqualification to the Ontario boys‘ relay team of Ray Pratt, Brian Roblin, Bruce Waites and Charlie Cole due to faulty techâ€" nique on the turns. Some outstanding efforts were put forth by Etobicoke swimmers, especially Denise Fizgerald‘s 1:01.1 for the 100 yards freestyle (girls 11/12); Doug. Keir‘s 1:07.3 for 100 yards backstroke (boys 11/12); Debbie Knowles with 1:07.1 for the 100 yards butterfly swim (girls 13/14); Janet Nash‘s 58.3 100 yards freestyle to down rival Angela Coughlan (59.5 U.S.A.C.); Jane Wright with 1:18.8 for 100 yards breaststroke (girls 11/12); and Lance Peto‘s 100 yard freestyle of 50.7 seconds. Out of town swimmers on the team were indispensable to the total victory, Once again it was London‘s Bill Kennedy and Sandra Dowler who supplied the knockâ€"outâ€"punches with three individual wins each, in the backstroke, freestyle and butâ€" terflyâ€"events. They will be making a strong bid to become members of Canada‘s Panâ€"American team at Winnipeg this year in July. It‘s hard to say just what effect that events of this nature have on Biâ€"culturalism, especially when the Maple Leaf hockey team trounces Montreal on the same day at exâ€" actly the same time, but the kids seem to byâ€"pass any political overtones and the swimming is done for, and only for, improveâ€" ment of the sport in the country. Most impressive swim of the day was Angela Coughlan‘s 5:37.1 for 500 yards freestyle. She is only 14 and looks like Internaâ€" tional Team material within a year or two. Best quote of the day came from Team Manager M. Gabriel Beaudry of Etobicoke, who, when asked if he could speak French (which he does), replied, "Sure, how do you think we got through immigration so fast?" SPLASHES: Sometimes people need reassurâ€" ance that the people for whom they are working believe in what they are doing and trying to do, especially swimming coaches and executives. From my own personal point of view, and surely the great majority would agree, I think that the dedicated people who are doing their part to enâ€" courage and promote this fine sport of swimming, deserve utâ€" most credit for their efforts. It is these people who make it possible for children .to compete in order to bring honor to their club, their city, their province aed â€" their country. The Air Canada Viscount that flew the team to Montreal and back cruised at 300 miles per hour at 17,000 feet and followed the St. Lawrence River . . . The annual EMAC Tag Day will be Friday evening, May 12th, and Saturday, May 13th. This remarkable swimâ€" ming club needs some support to help keep the Borough‘s name in the forefront of the sport. Don‘t look for the CNEâ€"to stage a "Big Pro Swim" this year and what a shame that will be. The man who brought this great swim to the public‘s attention, Mr. George Duthie of Etobicoke, seems to be fighting a losing battle against the establishment. Etobicoke‘s Board of Control has received a recommendation to build a public indoor pool at Park Lawn and Berry Road, small size. Why not go all the way and beâ€" come the only place in Ontario except McMaster University in Hamilton, and build a 50 meter Olympie pool? It would pay fof itself in the long run. This area is now the hotbed of swimming in the province and a 50 meter INâ€" DOOR pool would be a tremendous addition to the present facilities. How about it, council? OVERINFLATION IS DANGEROUS Overinflation js a dangerous conditionâ€"fé6# any auto tire, says the Canadian Highway Safety Council. Tires run hard and are extremely . sensitive to â€" impact damage and weakening of the tire body. Overinflation also causes exâ€" cessive wear in the centre of the tread. A tire with too much air pressure is more likely to suffer fabric breaks. nqa'ifl'ï¬u CONSTRYUCTION Mar 2071 ~ cuses WETâ€"DAMPâ€"LEAKY «â€"â€"â€" Thursday, May 4, 1967 Sprdg.
