_ _| _A LETTER TO THE â€"â€"|â€" ELECTORATE IN THE â€" PROVINCIAL RIDING OF YORK SOUTH FROM â€"â€"| â€"JACK HOLLEY. * After carefully studying the speech made by the minister‘of economics and development to the Ontario legisâ€" lature and after speaking to H. W. Suters, managing director of the Onâ€" tario Housing Corporation, the Wesâ€" ton Times is inclined to think that In fact, the problem has become so serious, the majority of Metro families with incomes of between $5,000 and $7,500 a year are caught in the horns of a dilemma. Apartment rents are rising $10 and $20 a month, but. when families investigate the prospects of home ownership, they are dismayed to discover that costs of single family dwellings are rising â€" at the rate of $1,000 or $2,000 a year. Apparently aware of this dilemâ€" ma, the Ontario government has takâ€" en steps to solve the housing problem. but it is questionable whether the solutions it offers are sufffcient. . As most people in the middle and low income brackets know, the housing crisis is a deadly serious proâ€" blem in Metro, a problem that can only be licked by building units at a much faster pace than occured last year. sls housing Is Ontario‘s soâ€"called "Home Ownership Made Easy" program a farce, or, is it a plan which will Is H.O.M.E. In our opinion however, a few thousand units will barely scratch the surface of the problem for hundreds of thouâ€" sands who bring home ‘average‘ pay cheques. Stanley _ Randall, minister of economics and development, has inâ€" dicated that 4,000 lots in the Metro region will be serviced by H.O.M.E. and will become available in late fall or early next spring. Beyond this however. all we know is that Queen‘s Park fervently hopes that the conâ€" struction industry will bring the supâ€" ply up to démand so that the governâ€" ment may get out of the home buildâ€" ing industry. *â€"~If 4,000 housing unit« is all the Ontario government intends to build, then people unfortunate enough to have incomes above the maximum allowable to qualify for public houâ€" sing are in for difficult times. Perhaps this impression is wrong, but there is so little factual material available about the program, it is difficult to arrive at any other conâ€" clusion. the H.O.M.E. program is designed more as a vote catchingâ€"gimmick than a serious assault on the problem of where people are going to live. Letter True Story Behind the Parking Dispute Dear Sir: __ The increased hourly rate on the John Street parking lot has caused concern to the Weston merchants and resentâ€" ment by the users of the lot. Since taxpayers in Ward 6 lack information on the issue, the following comparison between parking as conducted by Wesâ€" ton and York Township in 1966 should be placed before them. The Parking and Traffic f Middleâ€"ofâ€"theâ€"Road Polity which was added to the balâ€" ance of 1965, and resulted in $7,282.06 being turned over to the new Borough of York Parkâ€" ing Authority. This small reâ€" _serve built up over many years . will be wiped out by the acâ€" tion of the new Borough of York Parking Authority this year. The difference between the two financial statements is the fact that in Weston an amount of $10,758 was spent out of 1966 revenue for the debenture debt on the John St. lot, but a debenture debt of $32,000 in 1966 was not applied to the net revenue of the Township of York Parking operation. York Township lost more than $14,â€" 000 in the last year of operaâ€" Hion, St. subway. In 1966 the Parking. Authorâ€" ity of the Township of York showed a net profit of $18,â€" 411.11. Of this amount $10,29%.â€" 17 was special revenue derived from â€" compensation received from Metro Toronto for lost revenue and expenses during the construction of the Bloor Committee of the Town of Wesâ€" ton in 1966 was composed of Chairman Bill Perry and counâ€" cillors Wilf Reeves and Jim Trimbee. Their duty was to maintain parking lots in Wesâ€" ton at mo cost to the taxpayer; to collect revenue from the John St. lot and the parking meters; to maintain the metâ€" ers and the John St., Bellevue Cres., Little Avenve, Wilby Cres., Lawrence Ave. West and the Coleman parking lots out of yearly revenues. The financial statement of 1966 showed a net profit of $527.44, In Weston the merchants paid $70,000 towards the cost 200. ues L20. Granada Gold â€" Gold interiot, automatic, â€" radio, . The lot is faced with a 27% wage inâ€" crease from $7,600 to $9,700, plus added maintenance of (Continued on page 3) : $3,095. A comparison of the two financial statements shows a net revenue from parking meâ€" ters in Weston in 1966 of $7,424.66, as against a net reâ€" venve in the Township of York of $4,113.97. Weston parking meter revenue was applied to the overall cost of maintainâ€" ing six parking lots within the of the John St. lot which was applied directly to the cost of the lot. In York township the merchants paid $71,000 towards parking lots which was put in a reserve for parking fund. This reserve fund is being raâ€" pidly depleted because of anâ€" nual debenture cost applied against it. This reserve fund is reduced to approximately $43,000 now.
