The chief of the area, and his mighty braves, arranged a great feast, gave us wondrous gifts, and took us over the waters that flow southward to the mighty lake. ‘Three hundred and fiftyâ€"one years after Samuel de Champlain and his friends of the Huron tribe travelled the winding river to do battle with the Mohawks, we stood on its shores, fished its waters and enjoyed the friendliness of the natives. It was the Ontario group of Outâ€" doors Writers‘ third annual meetâ€" ing at Campbeliford, on the river which has long since been known as the Trent. Top Hospitality As guests of the Campbeliford Chamber of Commerce, we enjoyed fishing, feasting, and wonderful hospitality. Many thanks to their Mayor, Morley Tanner, for his friendly welcome and invitation to come back again in ‘67. â€" This year my hosts were Audrey and Bob Turnbull of "Fisherman‘s Paradise". It‘s a fishing and campâ€" ing resort situated above Lock 17, where some say the biggest and most fish are to be found. Of course Winnie and Jim Kerr don‘t believe it, and will tell you there‘s better fishing below the locks near their resort, Coles Point Lodge. Could be they‘re right. "Moby Dick" still lurks somewhere in the weeds not far from where the Crowe River flows into the Trent. Old timers believe Moby, a monstrous muskie, could weigh in at 70 pounds or more. bike Graydon "Blondie" Robinson is expected to be the hero of the Suburban Majors Bowling League. That‘s why everyone was interâ€" ested in seeing if he would live up to his reputation. He‘s considered one of Canada‘s bestâ€"and he proâ€" ceeded to prove it last Thursday night in the League‘s annual "Get Acquainted Night". Then again, Audrey and Bob Turnbull, and other folks up their way, claim Moby‘s no match for the tackleâ€"busters that roam their part of the river. Robinson, captain of the Thornâ€" crest Ford squad, rolled a starting 238 game and finished with a solid 222. Sandwiched in between was a sensational 255 and it could have been much higher with any kind of luck. He threw a beautiful ball in the eighth frame and for some inexplicable reason the 4 and 9 pins remained standing. Most bowlers would collapse when faced with a split of this nature but not Robinson. He promptly threw the perfect ball to just nick the 4 pin and slide it across on to the 9. His total score? "715". To give you an idea how good it is we‘ll mention that the closest bowler to him rolled a very exâ€" cellent 572. Since the inception of The Greater Toronto Ten Pin Bowling Association there have only been 51 bowlers out of the many thousands who have rolled over a million games during the past 15 years who have exceeded the elusive 700 total. Blondie Robâ€" inson will receive a huge trophy and the congratulations of the asâ€" sociation for his performance. The other 97 bowlers of the league gave him the ovation that he deserved. They hope some day to see another "700" when each dreams that they might be the bowler who throws it. The Ten Pin Tattler doesn‘t dare make his annual "fearless foreâ€" cast" this year because both eightâ€" team divisions are too strong and too hard to separate but he does In the first game, Eddie Pop outdueled Bernie Wojick with Pop allowing five hits and Wojick six hits. But Pop got better support and excellent fielding to take the first game 7â€"2. Ray Connelly, Bob Chalmer and Joey Gagne came through with good hits. Continental Can took a twoâ€" game lead in the bestâ€"ofâ€"five series for the Lakeshore Industrial Softball Championship, winning the first game 7â€"2 and the second in two extra innings, 7â€"4. Continental Can Two Up In Softball Championship The second game went two extra innings before McBride Rambler folded up 74. _ . _ Tom Alston ‘allowed but three hits for McBride and again Mcâ€" Bride had no less than six errors. McBride had a c to win it when Fred hit a home run and tied up in the last inning. Eddie Pop of the Can was touched for eight hits but again, got excellent fielding from his players, By the waters of the "Saggetteâ€" TEN PIN TALES WOODLAND i From Applewood Bowl by the Ten Pin Tattler Bev At any rate, I‘ve seen enough|or prize money, add unrevealed evidence on both sides to convince|fortunes in endorsements, product me that fishing‘s mighty good on|bonuses and appearance fees. the Trent. During my brief stay at Fisherman‘s Paradise, a lady guest landed a whopping sixâ€"pound largeâ€" mouth bass. "Not unusual", said Bob. "They eatch ‘em like that around here all the time." While thumbing through a stack of almost unbelievable picâ€" tures, he showed me one of a 42" from the end of their dock. Riviera Inn, meeting pl Coles Point Lodge, are but three of the district‘s 30 resorts that offer you fine accommodation, friendâ€" ship, and good fishing. Don Free, a native of Campbellâ€" ford, and fisherman extraordinaire, has earned the "Muskie King" title for that neck of the woods. He hangs onto the ones he calls "keepers"! That led to the founding of other clubs throughout the province, and evenâ€" tually brought about the formation of a new government department known as the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests. How do you get up that way? It‘s easy. Just take the 401 eastâ€" bound till you pass Cobourg and come to Highway 30. Up number 30 for about twenty or twentyâ€"five miles and there you are. Waterfowl hunters! Don‘t forget your $2 migratory bird licence obâ€" tained at post offices before you hunt ducks. It is essential that you have this licence as well as your provincial small game hunting licence when seeking migratory game birds. like the chances of the Cameo Cleaners and the White Elna Sewâ€" ing Center teams in the Suburban Division and guesses that Poyntz TV and the Norseman Tavern squads will battle with last year‘s champion Rexall Drugs for the Dixie Division title. Gary Hogge shot a fine 572 total to lead his Lawlor Realty five. Hal Pells Sr. with 543 and Cliff Letourâ€" neau‘s 506 were that team‘s next best. Ron Davio‘s 571 was Rexall‘s best. Sandy Riding, 566, and Cecil Whitman led Cameo Cleaners while Clare Keary‘s 565 topped the Brampton shooters. * Needless to say, there are other bowlers in the league and there were many fine scoring efforts for first night competition. Other plus 500 scores were: Bill Murfitt â€"541, Sam Russell â€"539, Gino Martini â€" 539, Joe Wrona â€"â€" 536, Jim Barnes â€" 526, Marcel Gasâ€" parettoâ€"523, Ernie Kingsmoreâ€" 522, Al Avery â€"517, Ron Pascos â€"516, Joe Pozzobon â€" 512, Dave Austin â€"511, Murray Wionzek â€" 511, Bruno Zapparoliâ€"509, Art Fielder â€" 507, Norm McLean â€" 505, Jim Inamotoâ€"503, and John Boland with 501. ‘The teams start shooting for the money this Thursday night at 7 a‘clock.
