C MEDICAL BUILDING 2160 Weston Rd. (at Church St. Traffic Light) George W. Bull What has happened to theutoâ€" pian 1960‘s Canadians heard so much about during the 1950‘s? Our gross national product, poâ€" pulation and wages have certainly gone up in leaps and bounds and unemployment figures are the smallâ€" est in years. Since the 1950‘s, a war on poverty has been declared in the United States and in our own country, the Federal government has employed some of the finest economic brains available to solve the nation‘s econâ€" omic dilemmas. The only problem is that all this prosperity has been matched with an increasing cost of living, housing and taxes and a rapidly rising class of poor people. With all these "brains‘" proâ€" posing and enacting legislation to eliminate poverty, why is poverty a greater problem today than it was At a recent board of education meeting, trustees inadvertently callâ€" ed our French Canadian neighbors "foreigners" and at the same time gave Latin the status of a "thriving language." This occured at a recen North York Board of Education meeting when lists of text books to be used in schools this year were discussed and approved. Books listed under "for eign" languages included French and Latin. BARRISTERS and $OLICITORS Howard G. Ashbourne, B A. . Carl W. Caskey, B.A., QC. #077 LAWRENCE AVE w. (Just West Of Weston Rd.) When the Canadian government has more power and spends more money than it ever did before, why are more and more people in Weston, North York and York making applications for pubâ€" lic housing? Perhaps these are problems that mortal man just can‘t solve. Or, perhaps it is really a case of our political parties attempting to feather theirown nests at the exâ€" pense of the country. A Royal Commission, consisting of some of Canada‘s top financial and industrial experts. was set up five years ago to advise the Federal government on ways to inject new life into Canada‘s floundering railâ€" way system. The Royal Commission produced a sound and sensible reâ€" port alright, but it was ingnored by the Government until a week ago when the whole system caesed to function. probably use it as yet another reaâ€" son why La Belle Province should sever relations with the rest of the country. Several months ago, Metro‘s transportation committee was conâ€" fronted with over a hundred angry ratepayers living on both sides of Yonge who insisted that the subway should not be built on their side of the street. The subway would be too noisey and unsightly, they comâ€" plained and perhaps quite correctly. Alexander A. Lasko No matter what route the subâ€" way eventually takes someone is bound to be hurt, predicted the conâ€" troller. But since the politicians don‘t want to lose votes, in all likliâ€" hood they will put off the final deâ€" cision until after the civic election. Until the location and date of the new subway is set, warned Conâ€" troller Hurlburt, it is next to imposâ€" The Weston Report ARCHITECTS B. Arch. MRALC. In other words, reasons the conâ€" troller, Metro‘s reluctance to make decisions is needless and is costing North York time and money. And if that isn‘t bad enough, here is some other sad news for the people who will be ultimately called on to pay for the subway. 1. Because of the strong opposition from the east side and west side property owners, Metro may ulâ€" timately decide to build the Yonge St. subway extension unâ€" derground which will cost an extra $15 to $20 million. 2. HALL 11 am â€" 4 pm Saturday, Sept. 17th, from In recent weeks, Toronto‘s three daily newspapers have been running feature after feature on the nature, cause and effect of inflation. H Articles headlined "The Shrinking Dollar" the "Diâ€" minishing Dollar", and just plain "Inflation" regularly pop up on page 1, sports, women‘s, editorial and finanâ€" If I have time, I read these reports with bated breath, because like millions of other Canadians, I am quite frankly worried about inflation rising faster than my wage in creases. If this happens, and there is strong _evidence to suggest that it can, I and all my wage earning counterâ€" parts, will end up in the poor house. If rising costs continue much longer, we will be subâ€" jected to price and wage controls and after that we will all be collecting our pay cheques from the state just as our fellow workers do in Russia and China. But let‘s get on the track again. Of all the reports in the dailies that I have seen, not a single one (and this is just my opinion) has dug down to the very rools of inflation and proposed a positive cure. s I‘ve read stories sympathising with the Federal govâ€" ernment‘s attempts at checking inflation and stories lamâ€" basting the Ottawa House for not doing enough, but no where is there a definition of the cause and cure for the "shrinking" dollar. In a sober, half page spread in last Wednesdoy‘s Star, financial columnist Jack McArthur in essence wrote that the Federal government is doing very little about inflation, but the provinces (big spenders too) are doing even less. The Feds control bank credit and interest rates he notes, but the provinces have as much or more to say about total government spending, since they don‘t have to allocate more than half their budget for such fixed costs as old age pensions, baby bonuses, defence and transâ€" fer payments on the national debt. Mr. McArthur said if the provinces increased taxes and reduced spending (the latter which would be an unâ€" precedented move in this country) the extra bucks taken out of the economy would dampen the demand for conâ€" sumer goods and thereby force industry to hold off price increases. If it wasn‘t for the catch it might be a good arguâ€" ment. There is however and it is this.
