Do they ask us if we want electricity or waâ€" ter in our homes. Do they allow backhouses? No!!~ Why then, can‘t they do the work without our permission? A pet saying of mine is this: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Think about it, isn‘t it true? If we eat three good meals a day, aren‘t our chances of living to a ripe old age beiter than the person who neglects his diet? Do statistics not prove that our country cousins are a healthier, heartier lot than we who are forced to breathe the smoke and smog generated by a half million motor vehicles and a half million heating units in our homes and factories? Is not the athlete who regularly exercises not healthier than the desk tied company executive who won‘t let up even though he has ulcers and high blood pressure? Dr. John Brown, professor of physiological hygiene at the University of Toronto, commented this week that "The Health League is at the crossroads because people in Canada are not interested in healthâ€" they are only inâ€" terested if they lose it. Health insurance isn‘t health inâ€" surance, it is sickness insurance." Estimates suggest that the annual cost of sickness in Canada is $3,000,000,000. The Health League, appointed Canada‘s National Citiâ€" zens‘ Committee of the World Health Organization in 1952, was begun in 1919 to fight against venereal disease. It continued to press for preventive health measures in such fields as immunization, milk pasteurization, and currently. fluoridation of water supplies. In 1927, Canada lost 1.281 children because if diphâ€" theria. Thirty years later, with twice the population, there was not one death from diphtheria in Canada. Immunizaâ€" tionâ€" of children brought about this saving of lives and prevention of diphtheria and other childhood diseases: whooping cough, scarlet fever and poliomyelitis. s A vaccine is available now | against . measles, which can be a serious disease for some of the children who catch it. Dr. Crawford Anglin, writing in Health, said that there were 1,210 measles deaths in Canada between 1953 and 1963. Of 1,250 children with measles admitted in the same period to the Hospital for Sick Children, 94 suffered from encephalitis, inflammation of the brain. Of youngsters who get this complication following measles, 10 pfelr cent die and 30 per cent are left with serious afterâ€" effects. . This is another irreversible situation which can be eliminated by preventive health measures. The League has been advocating measles vaccination, with the endorseâ€" ment of pediatricians like Dr. Anglin. That‘s The Way ...
