October, 1954 was one of the wettest months in our recorded history. All the streams were already running high and the ground was waterlogged. Then came the torrential rains of Hazel. In the 300 square miles of the Humber watershed, nearly nine inches of rain fell on the 15th and 16th of October. This translates into 40 billion gallons of water all trying to find its way to Lake Ontario. Streams became rivers, rivers became lakes. Most of the bridge approaches were washed out â€" Westonites will remember the St. Phillip‘s Bridge and the Lawrence Avenue West bridge approach disappearing. O _ A BRIEF HISTORY OF WESTON Do youremember 19547 In 1954, the Toronto subway opened. At the C.N.E., sixteen year old Marilyn Bell swam across lake Ontario, the first to do so and in Vancouver, Roger Bannister and John Landy ran the "miracle mile". But for those of us who lived in Ontario and especially those in Toronto, adjacent to the Humber River, vividly remember what we were doing the night of October 15th â€" the night we were visited by "Hazel", better known by her full name, " Hurricane Hazel"! Ask anyone who knows, we do not have hurricanes in Ontario. Hurricanes originate far and away in the Caribbean and they don‘t reach Canada. Except Hazel. Hazel did reach Canada, causing expensive and extensive damage and resulted in 82 deaths.
