Surely there is a clear parallel between this situation and what happens to most of us from time to time. By Rev. Father Warren Eling _St. Anne‘s Anglican Church The biblical accounts of Jesus Christ‘s Resurrection, and of his appearances to his disciplines, have a peculiar dramatic power and an ability to touch the heart and mind that cannot be imâ€" proved upon. Nowhere is this more true than in the story of Christ‘s appearance to his two disciples on the road to Emâ€" maus. It is found in chapter 24 of St. Luke‘s Gospel, and to me it is one of the most moving stories in all of the New Testaâ€" ment. | want to share with you just one of the aspects of this story which makes it especially meaningful for me. The first thing which strikes me is that Christ seems deliberately to have hidden his identity from his disciples. He could have _ appeared dramatically before them and dazzled them with the glory of his Ressurection. But, he did not! Instead, he started from their preoccupation with the tragic events of the preceding few days, and then he opened to them the Scriptures. He acâ€" cepted their hospitality, and finally made himself known to them in all the simplicity of the Breaking of the Bread. The lesson of Emmaus is still an imâ€" portant one. God is at work in every aspect of human life, even in the smallest and simplest things. If God is to be able to touch our lives, then our eyes must be open. God might meet this situaâ€" tion, if he chose, by some dramatic vision of his power and his concern for us, just as Christ might have appeared dramatically to his disciples on the road to Emmaus. But, this is not usually God‘s way. Such overwhelming revelations would almost compel our faith, and this is not what God wants. So Jesus, on the road to Emâ€" maus, took the very experience and knowledge which his disciples had, and used them to make God‘s love and purposes known. He showed how even the Cross came within the love and purpose of God. He climaxed his revelation with the homely, but to them deeply significant, act of breaking bread with them. There is still a lesson here for us to learn at Easter 1985, for we so often fail to hear the vicâ€" torious message of the Cross. Jesus Christ made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of the bread â€" a seemâ€" ingly small thing, but characteristic of him. God still makes himself known to us in countless small ways; but it is characteristic of him. A Court Jester was called to the deathbed of his King. Although he had been the King‘s favourite ‘Fool‘, nothing he said or did relieved the King‘s anxiety. The Rev. John E. Course St. John‘s Anglican Church in the next hour or so.‘ ‘What about your Majesty‘s preparaâ€" tion for the journey?‘ continued the Jester. ‘Alas,‘ replied the King, ‘I have been so preoccupied _ that I have had no time to prepare for the journey. ‘Then take my cap and bells,‘ the Jester exclaimed boldly, ‘I thought that | was the biggest fool in your Kingdom, but now I realize that here lies a greater fool than 1.‘ How can a man who knows that he is about to take the last journey of his earthly life waste his last moments listening to foolish jokes, ridiculous stories?‘ Many years ago, Dr. Samuel Johnson wrote, ‘Master‘, inquired the Jester, ‘why are you so despondent and sad? ‘Because,‘ the King replied, ‘I have to leave my palace and my people to take a journey from which 1 shall not return.‘ ‘Is it a long journey,‘ asked the Jester. ‘Indeed, it is,‘ the King answered. ‘It is the longest journey known to man.‘ ‘When are you leaving?‘ the Jester inquired. ‘I do not know for certain,‘ the King replied, ‘but | believe it will be ‘How can death be so sudden to a being who always knew that he must die and that the time of his death was uncertain?‘ Our life on earth should be a continuous preparation for that journey which all of us must take. Our belief in the ‘Resurrecâ€" tion of the body and the life of the world to come‘ is one of the fundamental doctrines of the Christian Church It is the joyous and exciting ‘Good News‘ that we will celebrate this Easter Day The Easter Gospel speaks to us of Eternal Life ‘here‘ and ‘now‘. We will still live under the shadow of death, but we are no longer afraid. Physical death is still the doorway through which we must pass to the world beyond, but we who have died with Christ are alive unto God and death has no more dominion over us. In the words of Paul the Apostle: Death has been destroyed! The victory has been won! This is what we celebrate on Easter Day as we worship the Living Christ and proclaim his Resurrection from the dead.
