These books are to be read with family members to help the student become a better reader. Allâ€"star reading is a proâ€" gram where volunteer coaches read books that are at just the right level of diffiâ€" culty with students and reinforce target reading strategies taught by the teacher to the whole class to get "unstuck" when readâ€" ing. Thanks to the vision and initiative of a retired princiâ€" pal, Lynda Silvester, proâ€" grams such as Strong Start, have been provided to schools by forging links with community partners who have generously proâ€" vided resources and a troupe of volunteer coaches and site coordinators. The 10â€"week letters, sounds and words program uses short games and activâ€" ities to provide repetition to help young children recogâ€" nize letters, a sound each one represents and some initial words in print. New this year is a wordâ€" building section that enables students to learn to build words. Across Waterloo Region, during the 2005â€"2006 school year, about 1,400 volunteers worked for more than 22,000 hours to help about 1,500 children using this program. Reading and underâ€" standing what is being read is one of the most imporâ€" tant parts of every child‘s learning. It requires the combined efforts of teachers, parents and volunteers to ensure each child succeeds. The Perimeter Institute will host a public lecture, called Time and Motion, about Newton‘s first law of motion on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at Waterloo collegiate instiâ€" tute. The first law will be described in its historical context, explaining a conâ€" nection with the ancient Greek‘s distinction between natural and violent motion and with Descartes‘ natural philosophy. _ _ The event is tailored for the general public. . â€" Admission is free, but tickets are required.
