Two big hearts have moved on I hope that the citizens of Waterâ€" loo take Hannah‘s message, to focus on what is most important, to heart. Ignoring terrifying threats to humanity in order 40 save time for I would dare anyone to argue from a moral standpoint that celebrity gossip is more important than global catastrophes such as cliâ€" mate change, the spread of AIDS, and rainforest destruction and degradation, especially after readâ€" ing HMannah‘s letter. _ Young people are going to have to endure the pain caused by the actions of past generations, so in responding and attempting to solve these issues, youth are ultimately helping themselves. 1 agree that not enough young people understand or are interested in global issues that wiH, ultimately, hurt them. Iwould like to respond to Hannah Kunert‘s letter, "Who cares about Brad and Angelina‘s baby?", by sayâ€" ing way to go! I am inspired to see someone in Grade 8 who is interestedin enviâ€" ronmental and social justice issues, and writes about them with such conviction. 1 have always been amazed that Dave and I are triends. He is a tall, gregarious, outgoing guy, while I tend to be fairly reserved (believe it or not) until I get to know people. Dave‘s outlook on life is bright and positive, while L am somewhat more c ynical I also have more hair than him. Not that it‘s HHe‘s one of those people everyone likes. Truthful ly, despite my best efforts, I can‘t find anyone with : bad thing to say about him. Grade 8‘s letter was inspiring There were tears and hugs and all kinds of emotion at the station during Dave‘s final week. He‘s always dreamed of being the PD of a station â€" to have the chance to put his own stamp on things. Dave is moving on to become the pro gram director of the country music sta tion in town. He was a good guy, and there aren‘t enough of those. Another good guy, is my friend Dave Schneider. Last week, Dave worked his final onâ€"air shift for KOOL FM after more than 12 years with us. t ise Dave V went by in ou s booming laugh ibout ng mindlessh coffice without somewhere in ! am saving your papers article for my grandchildren to read and take to their own schools with them. A big thank you to Japnaam Kaur for being so caring and sharing and a beautiful example to all of us. I think Japnaam‘s parents have been a wonderful example for her and children learn best when their parents share their own experiences with honesty and are proud of their countries of birth. Little girl sets big example Hannah, I hope you carry your passion for justice into your highâ€" school career and beyond. I have no doubt that you will be a force to be reckoned with. catching up on celebrity gossip simply not productive. A few years ago, when our promoâ€" tions manager Val Corcoran, a lifelong friend of Dave‘s, died suddenly in the office, it was a grief stricken Dave IAN Schneider who spoke at her memorial RKE service. 6 His imposing presence that day was both welcoming and comforting, and 1 do believe his faith was the reason many of us were able to get through those days. I don‘t know anyone else who could have had the same kind of impact Being men, of course, we‘re not much for heart felt sentiments when we part ways I never told him this. but Dave Schneider has all the qualities I wish I had. C That optimistic outlook, I think was based in Dave‘s faith. Schneider has never been afraid of wearing his beliefs on his sleeve. It‘s another area where he and I are completely opposite. : Dave‘s abiding faith in God is the cornerstone of his life and his attitude. Thank you, and my best wishes to Japnaam and her family. The girls are also learning through our lovely sponsor child that the color of your skin is a thing of beauty and not something to fear, that other religions and beliefs should be respected and not denied, that other kids who believe in Islam are just the same as them and whether a daddy has one wife or several still does not change our love for each and never should. How can a family survive on money that only buys a few lollies and a small toy here in Australia? 1 am so pleased to say that through this they are understanding how difficult it must be when a whole family receives less per week in wages than they themselves do at their young ages as ‘spending money‘ each week. . and send her pictures they dr and photos. onughts on Iife with f eekdov morning fron 3 KOOL FAM Averil Greenhalgh Australia | a w | What is undisputed, however, is that the cates a powerful message, I‘ve come to realize that all of my pursuits ating art. radio. making films, parenting and are all essentially different facets of the san nication. Some decry th others, including Fischl himself, praise it frailty of the human condition. In a progressive studio course that I teach, 1 have talked about some of the controversial art inspired by the events of 9/11 â€" most specifically, the piece titled Tumbling Woman by New York artist Eric FischI. I teach studio art at Wilfrid Laurier University. In a bit of roleâ€"reversal ‘he has been exploring his creativity through expressive arts, while I‘ve just recently discovered an appreciation for one of his specialties, gardening. The reason I mention David is that you may see glimmers of his inspiration in my column. He knows the value and the power of communication. â€" _ He visited New York to study the ecology of Ground Zero, just six weeks after the destruction of the World Trade Centre, and often brings his photographs into classes he teaches about land reclamation and environmental pest management. "My classroom becomes completely quiet when I mention Qmun’fl'lcrn,” David is quoted on the Fleming College website. "It‘s still a very sensitive issue for my students. They‘re con: cerned about their future, about the war, about the economy, wondering what kind of world is waiting for them." As a parent of two young daughters. I often wonder about the world they‘ll be living in 20, 30, 40 years from now. It‘s tough to even contemplate the challenges they‘ll face â€" overpopulation and the downwardâ€"spiraling environment are particularly scary. . Communication is a gift not to be wasted _ This column marks yet another odd parallel between my life and the life of my older brother, David Ward, who was a columnist for The Lindsay Daily Post. In reading Sean Strickland‘s final column last week, I was pleased to read that his column never became a task to write, but rather something he looked forward to every week. I too am enthusiastic and appreciate this opportunity to share my views and perspectives on a wide range of issues. " mave, over the years, expressed myself in many ways. I‘ve had art exhibitions at local galleries, created public art installaâ€" tions like the Millennium Thumbprints monument at Kitchenâ€" er City Hall, and made a few documentary films. I‘ve even tried my hand at performance art on a few occaâ€" sions, with one exhibit involving me donning a gorilla mask and spending an evening locked in a cage. However, in an attempt to communicate some of my more obscure conceptuâ€" al ideas, I think it raised more questions than it answered. I also have a great love for the craft of writing and have writâ€" ten for various publications over the years. I‘m excited to add this regular column in the Waterloo ( hronicle to the list. While many think of writing as a solitary activity, I find that some of my most productive work comes out of collaboration â€" particularly in the sharing of drafts and outlines with a fellow writer.
