MADD‘s Red Ribbon campaign kicks off on a hopeful note he local chapter of I Mothers Against Drunk Driving {MADD) kicked off its annual Red Ribbon camâ€" paign on a high note in Waterloo yesterday, elated over the federal governâ€" ment‘s latest step toward restricting the use of condiâ€" tional sentences for violent crimes. According to the MADD Web site, last week Justice Minister Irwin Cotler introâ€" duced legislative direction on the appropriateness of conditional sentences for crimes, including impaired driving, where a person has been killed or seriously injured. "The fact this even got a reading is pretty amazing," said Sandra Henderson. president of MADD Waterâ€" loo Region. "We‘re quite hopeful." But that doesn‘t mean the work is done. she reminded. MADD continues to campaign the Canadian government to lower the legal drinking limit from .08 per cent, or 80 mg of alcoâ€" hal, to .05 per cent â€" a wish that‘s at the forefront of the group‘s current fundraising and awareness drive. "The laws in Canada are archaic." Henderson said. "In Australia the limit used to be .08 (per cent} but they‘ve moved it down to 43 iper centl. Now they‘te working on lowering it again to .02 percent." Uhe need for change wits quite apparent during the latest Oktoberfest, Henderâ€" son said. We had a RIDE program set up out front of our affice," she said. "One driver that was pulted over had been drinking and he had kids in the backseat â€" one without a seathelt on. But, because of our laws, he only received a 12 â€"hour iBicensei suspension."
