'Good night Alphie."' he smiled. Moulenbeek took his first steps down the path of his long musical career when he was 13 during school music classes. In high school the music programs drdn't have any instruments, so he spent his time practising on vocals. Ekntuaiiy he decided to take up an instrument. "I borrowed a saxophone from a pal of mine who had an old horn, and thought, Oh. I'll teach myself." he While learning to play, he read an article from a saxo- phonist in Toronto and con- tacted him. Moolenbeek started to study with the man. and went on to become an expert on the saxophone. -"II sort of took over my life," he said. Now, after having released three CDs, with more on the way. he teaches on the music faculties of McMaster University and the University ofWaterloo. "Most of my students have plans to go into music teaching." he said, so he informs all oi his students about his public school workshops. "Kids have to understand the emotional content that comes from the sounds. " Moolenheek said music can he approached from a lot of different directions. and one of the major expec- tations is to have critical thinking when listening to music. Moolenheek provides about 120 classes per year to tcache" and students across six different srhool hoards. This year and last he has spent time with the Water- loo Region District crhnol hoard. "A lot of teachers had to deliver music curriculum, hut didn't have a musical background." he said.
