CFUW group gear up for book sale far behind? This year it occurs April 15 and 16 at First United Church, at the corner of William and King streets in Waterloo. History The Kâ€"W Canadian Fedâ€" eration _ of _ University Women has sponsored a used book sale since 1964 â€" an amazing statistic. And many of the club‘s former convenors of the book sale are still active in the club and in the larger communiâ€" ty. Fortyâ€"one years is a Lâ€"Oâ€" Nâ€"G time for anything to last, but 41 years of collectâ€" ing used books: sorting them; scheduling volunâ€" teers; putting up the tables; organizing the items; selling the books; tearing down the sale; and earmarking the money to help further women‘s education, is a complex and astonishing accomplishment. The times have changed dramatically from the socially activist 1960s through the "me" generaâ€" tions to a new golden age of the 21st century. The book sale has survived financial ups and downs in the national economy and the By LynNNE WOOLSTENCROFT boe Phe Chronwle Western Ontario‘s premier show Elora Community Centre David Street APRIL 16 & 17 Elora, Ontario Sat 10 a m â€" S p m Sun 11 a m. â€" 5 pm Admission $6 00 Free parking hen spring comes can the CFUW‘s Used Book Sale he antique show TOLL FREE 1 800.667.0619 WWW ANTIQUESHOWSCANADA COM 55 dealers‘ You‘ll find a full range of antiques and collectibles, a large selection of furniture, jewellery, linens, textiles, vintage clothing, folk art, fine art, glass, china and much more changes in leadership styles In fact, it has more than sur vived. The Used Book Sale thrives‘ Myths and Facts lales about the book sale abound, but one favourite concerns the young profesâ€" sional who presented himiherself to the assemâ€" bled book sellers to request a number of "feet of leatherâ€" bound books". When the sellers looked baffied. the explanation was that new shelves had been built near the fireplace and it did rot matter the content of the books. It was the "look" that was important! Enjoy a day in historic Elora â€" antiques, unique shops. fine dining, museum, and scenic natural attractions Many a member has forged friendships with the women who toil to sort and sell the used books. It was CFUW, Kâ€"W that copied the idea of the reuse of books. Edna Staebler brought to the club an idea she had heard in Winnipeg at a national meeting. Since then, the book sale has been the major fundâ€" raising initiative of the club. To the club‘s knowledge. this is the longestâ€"lasting fundâ€" raising book sale in the nation. The dedication of the members to the book sale is legendary. And the tradition continues. Carol Dixon, chair of the book sale committee, has a date with Vancouver, where she will take up a new posiâ€" tion â€" but she has arranged to complete the sale and then leave â€" the next day with her belongings and the club‘s heartfelt best wishes. Many members of the comâ€" munity know Carol from her responsibilities for volunâ€" teerts at the Grand River Hospital. The club‘s best wishes, gratitude and admiâ€" ration go with Carol. It takes dedication and determination to pull off the book sale. Already many skids of books have been sorted and made ready for the sale. In a warehouse, each day, women work hard to get as many of the books collected _ and â€" sorted through the early months of the year.
